Not really. Boxing and fencing are martial arts and came to America with the colonist. Karate dojos, and individual Tai Chi instructors had begun to spring up in California already by the time Bruce Lee started teaching Jeet Kun Do. He began teaching other types of Wushu such as Wing Chun, which is what garnered backlash from the Chinese community.

Note: Tai Chi is a type of Wushu/Kung Fu. Karate is Japanese.
