Martial arts have existed since the beginning of human civilization in one form or another. Bruce Lee has been called the "father of mixed martial arts". because of Jeet Kun Do principles.

Chuck Norris jokes are 8-9 years old at this point so people should stop with that already though

These are martial arts that existed hundreds of years before Bruce Lee was born. And there are many many more
Edit: Capoeira may been closer to 100-200 years before his birth depending on when it evolved in Brazil.

Not really. Boxing is a martial art and boxing came to America with the colonist. Karate dojos, and individual Tai Chi instructors had begun to spring up in California already by the time Bruce Lee started teaching Jeet Kun Do. He began teaching other types of Wushu such as Wing Chun, which is what garnered backlash from the Chinese community.

Note: Tai Chi is a type of Wushu/Kung Fu. Karate is Japanese.
