Fire is one of the 5 basic elements. Usualy the user gather chakra in his lungs and inhales some air. Then he releases it creating fire. It's used mostly for offense but it could be used for deffense too. Fire is strong against wind and weak against water. I think that the most commonly seen fire jutsu is: Fire Style: Fireball jutsu.
The Uchiha clan is shown to be very skilled in fire. Naturaly every Uchiha's first element is fire. It is said that he Uchiha crest symbolize the fan that blows the fire.

Ok no watch and feel the fire as you meditate about it. Not close to it or you'll burn. But try to feel the heat and try to channel your chakra. Try thinking of the heat as a force, combine it with the fuel of fire which is the air itself, the air you're inhaling now. Then try to mix the heat within your chakra and think of the fire, that way you'll be able to tap onto the great katon chakra.
