I recently began re reading the manga because I'm tired of the breaks and waiting even longer for the next chapters, so I hope to have several ready by the time I catch up.
But I digress.
I'm at the part where sasuke first uses chidori and gai mentions that chidori was nicknamed raikiri because kakashi cut a bolt of lightning with it.
Several months ago I remember a thread about whether or not this is possible (which it technically isn't).
I just realized why it got the nickname (honestly I forgot that raikiri was just a nickname because sasuke and kakashi hardly ever call it chidori any more).
If you remember, when sasuke faced Ay, Ay recognized the technique as kakashi's. I'm sure you see where I'm going with this. It is called lightning blade not because he cut a lightning bolt, but because he stabbed Ay with it. His lightning armor not only makes it very hard to do damage to Ay, but it also makes him incredibly fast. One might even say Ay is as fast as lightning. This, like when Hanzo dubbed Oro, Tsunade and J man the sannin, Ay declared chidori the "lightning blade"
Likely, after the fight.
