I recently began re reading the manga because I'm tired of the breaks and waiting even longer for the next chapters, so I hope to have several ready by the time I catch up.

But I digress.

I'm at the part where sasuke first uses chidori and gai mentions that chidori was nicknamed raikiri because kakashi cut a bolt of lightning with it.

Several months ago I remember a thread about whether or not this is possible (which it technically isn't).

I just realized why it got the nickname (honestly I forgot that raikiri was just a nickname because sasuke and kakashi hardly ever call it chidori any more).

If you remember, when sasuke faced Ay, Ay recognized the technique as kakashi's. I'm sure you see where I'm going with this. It is called lightning blade not because he cut a lightning bolt, but because he stabbed Ay with it. His lightning armor not only makes it very hard to do damage to Ay, but it also makes him incredibly fast. One might even say Ay is as fast as lightning. This, like when Hanzo dubbed Oro, Tsunade and J man the sannin, Ay declared chidori the "lightning blade"

Likely, after the fight.

I don't know what you're getting at lol but some say sasuke have Raikiri but just likes to call it chidori some say Raikiri is a more focused chakra unlike chidori

Don't know when Kakashi could have fought the Raikage if he was when and if they fought and besides, when Naruto wanted to talk to the Raikage, Ay did know Kakashi but said nothing significant about him if he did and your theory was true I'm sure that would have been the perfect time to tell us that's how Chidori got that nickname.

Raikiri is an actual legend in Japan someone warrior or sword smith (CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY) used their blade to cut a bolt of lightning in half.

If Ay ever fought kakashi he would of mentioned it.

Or at least hinted at it.

Chidori is not the lightning blade it is a smaller less concentrated form of it

I'm going to find the scan that has Ay mentioning kakashi by name. Figured people would have remembered lol. BRB

Also the point is that I'm just making an observation. It was something debated a while ago and likely forgotten about, but hey. I'm not flaming or starting sh** so I say it's at least a decent thread XD

Here you go,

Here sasuke pierces through the armor with a Chidori. He manages to stab him.

Here you see the Raikage mentioning Kakashi.

It is true that kakashi is famous, but in the fight against zabuza, he did not know about chidori at all. In fact he thought that all kakashi could do was copy. Hence, kakashi is famous for his sharingan, not the chidori. It is likely that kakashi never uses chidori unless he can kill his opponent, because the less is known about your technique, the fewer counters that are made for it. A secondary reason would be that it drains a lot of stamina out of kakashi, so he would presumably try to use it as a last resort.

Granted this is all before he trained more, so his stamina is still quite poor a this point.

That being said, through infamy alone, it is very unlikely that Ay would know about chidori. So he most likely saw it, and it's possible that he was hit by it.

Also to those saying chidori is weaker than raikiri,

Gai states that chidori cut a lightning bolt. And that is why it's called raikiri.

Thus chidori = raikiri

Edit: guy above me beat me to it. I'm going to add that kakashi was standing right there, so if Gai is incorrect, kakashi would have corrected him.

Didn't Kakashi say that Zabuza was the only one who had survived seing his sharingan though? And Chidori is not supposed to be used without the sharingan since you need to predict your opponents moves to avoid being hurt when doing such a thrust. I am to tired now to look for mangascans but I think all of this is correct. And that would if so mean that Kakashi didn't face Ay, or he is lying to Zabuza since Ay is clearly not dead.

Hmmm you make a good point.

Considering zabuza had heard of kakashi's sharingan, I would say that kakashi was lying to him, to psych him out. Especially considering what he did the first time. Clearly it didn't work, but it's not like zabuza was going to go around complaining that kakashi lied to him XD

Also I started re reading about two or three days ago, so everything is pretty fresh in my mind. So I know you're right about what you said.
