Last time I checked, the only reason Hiruzen died at the end was because he wanted to seal the 1st and 2nd Hokage. In the Hiruzen vs Orochimaru fight, Hiruzen was VIOLATING orochimaru.

Hiruzen also sealed Orochimarus arms. He could have sealed him entirely.

The 1st and 2nd were part of Orochimaru's power. So yeah. On top of that Orochimaru impaled him with Kusanagi and that stopped Hiruzen. How was Hiruzen VIOLATING Orochimaru? He could not have sealed Orochimaru entirely. Why? Because he didn't. Also, what on earth can Hiruzen do against Hydra Mode? Absolutely nothing. Immortality Jutsu? Nothing. Edo Tensei? He has to kill himself to stop it. Hiruzen worried that only Minato would be able to compete with Orochimaru's power.

Probably. I admit a prime Hiruzen has a VERY good chance at beating Orochimaru. I think the manga said if Hiruzen was 10 years younger he could beat Orochimaru. But this other guy says Orochimaru lost to an old Hiruzen, even though at the end of the battle Orochimaru was alive and Hiruzen was dead.

And the Hokages were not acting on their own, they were doing only what Orochimaru told them. Hiruzen tricked and surprised Orochimaru, that's how he got a one-up on him. That's really the only thing impressive Hiruzen did in that battle. Yeah, Hiruzen fought the Nine Tails with many, many other Shinobi. He fought Nine Tails with all of Konoha. If Orochimaru went Hydra Mode then Hiruzen would get a couple ANBU and a couple other Shinobi for back up. The Sound/Sand Invasion was still going on.
My question still stands: Why was Orochimaru alive with only his arms sealed and Hiruzen dead on the ground?
And Hiruzen himself admits that he was worried only the 4th could take on Orochimaru. Take his opinion into consideration would you?
