The Legend

Gary’s eyes narrowed with determination. His fists clenched, the fingernails digging into his palms. He was ready for this mission, this journey of importance. This princess demanded it of him, and he really had no choice.

“Princess Zerabitu, I will steal the Triforce for you, or die trying.” Gary nodded his head in affirmation as he spoke.

“I’m glad to hear that.” the princess spoke as she gathered her things together.

As she turned around, she noticed Gary was already leaving. She ran after him. By the time she had caught up with him, he was already in the courtyard, contemplating the easiest route out of Hyrule Castle.

“Hey, aren’t you going to wait for me?” She spoke in such regal yet flirtatious tones that would drive Gary wild.

Gary turned and bowed in her direction, standing tall and firm once again, “Yes your highness. Did you plan on traveling with me?”

Her lips curled into a smile before she spoke, “Sneaking in was a feat in itself. I can’t imagine how you plan on getting back out though. It’d be much too risky, whereas you could just follow me out instead.”

Gary shrugged, that would definitely be much easier. He probably wouldn’t have to kill some random guards in the process either, so it worked for him. The part that worked the most though, was when she took his hand in hers.

“What, did you grow up in a forest, devoid of civilization?” She asked.

He shook his head. “Well, in all actuality, yes. It was a terrible childhood.”

“I can understand that. However, you are my personal escort, thus you take the lead and I follow.” She smiled calmly.

He seemed to understand. His hand tightened around hers as he began walking and she nonchalantly followed. As he approached the first set of guards, they seemed alarmed at first. However, accompanied by a princess, they shrugged the matter off and returned to their duties.

It continued like this until they reached the main iron gate of the castle. The guard there seemed hesitant to open it for her.

“Your majesty, I don’t think it would be wise for you to travel at this time of night. There are hooligans, and brutes droning restlessly around the empty market.”

“As you can see, I am accompanied by a courageous noblemen. He will thwart any trouble that may cross our paths. I would advise you to never imply what would or wouldn’t be wise or me again.” She sighed as she finished speaking.

The guard seemed to understand, and began opening the gate wide enough for them to pass through comfortably. Gary began thinking to himself about royalty, and how amazing it must be to live as such.

By the time they reached the marketplace, Gary realized just how deserted it was at night. Packs of stray dogs were running around nosing through refuse and whatnot. One dog made a bee line straight towards Gary.

“So, have you ever heard the legend of the Triforce?” the princess asked.

“Triforce? You mean that movie where three girls touch each oth...” Gary begins reminiscing of childhood mischief.

“You dolt, I’m referring to the legend of origin. Your very own existence. The source of all power, courage, and knowledge in this world.” She scolded him.

Suddenly a cut scene begins where three golden looking gods engulfed in fiery colors of red, green and blue shoot through the emptiness of space. Suddenly the pause button is pressed and the remainder of the cut scene is skipped.

It all suddenly made sense to Gary. Unfortunately, it left questions unanswered too. Just how was he supposed to steal something so overwhelmingly powerful? And surely other people would have tried to steal it in the past?

“I know exactly what you’re thinking right now. Don’t worry about it. It’s been guarded by the Royal Family up until now, and requires a complex set of keys to access it.” Princess Zerabitu spoke with vast amounts of knowledge. It was almost like she had been planning this for a long while.

“That’s the only requirement? Some keys?” He yawned, it didn’t seem that difficult of a task.

“In order to gain these keys, you have to gain the trust of the three guardians who hold these keys. They will probably require you to complete difficult feats in order to obtain the keys.” She almost had this arrogant look on her, as if she expected his resolve to waiver.

“Can’t I just kill these guardians, and take their keys? That would be way faster and easier.” He rubbed his chin thinking about the guardians.

She shook her head, “No, they can only be given to you willingly.”

“Well … shit. Guess I have to choice but to head on out that. I guess I’ll see you when I come back with the Triforce.” He began stretching as he prepped himself for an incredible voyage.

She seemed impatient with his lack of patience. “You aren’t going anywhere by yourself. You don’t seem to know anything about this world.”

He grinned from ear to ear, “You just don’t trust me with the Triforce.”

“Let’s just go.” She took the lead this time.

What would be their first destination? It seemed there was a relatively large ranch ahead of them. A large sign reading “Lon Lon” on it’s gate.

“So, one of the guardians … is a horse?” He questioned.

She seemed to be getting agitated with his sarcasm and gave him no answer. Instead she just walked through the gate. Of course Gary followed, as if he had much choice. He couldn’t let the princess wander off on her on.

A horse neighed in the distance, and Jonathon finally woke up. “Ooh, I love ponies!”

Almost simultaneously Gary and Princess Zerabitu shouted at the fairy, “Shut up.”

Jonathon made a whimper, and retreated behind Gary’s shoulder.

However, the commotion seemed to gather the attention of a ranch hand, who approached them. “We aren’t to have any visitors until Talon returns. Malon went to the Market to try and find him in whatever bar he’s passed out in.”

“Ahem,” Princess Zerabitu made her presence better known.

The ranch hand gave her a peculiar look, then turned around and started walking off.

It seemed like the princess was about to start yelling, but Gary cut her off, “Allow me the honor, your majesty.”

He lunged forward drawing his blade, quickly passing the ranch hand. As he turned around again, his blade pressed into the man’s jugular notch.

“The princess demands your assistance. You will oblige her.” Gary spoke firmly.

The man simply nodded acknowledgement.

“Good then, we require one horse. A small one, that I may ride.” The princess was content.

After a moment in a barn, the ranch hand emerged with a pony. It wouldn’t be able to carry a lot of equipment, but it would be able to carry a person or two.

“This one’s name is Epona. Be careful though, she doesn’t like strangers.” The ranch hand gave the princess the reigns.

The pony immediately began snorting and resisting, trying to get away from her.

“Allow me, your highness.” Gary spoke as he punched the pony in the nose. It subsequently submitted.

“Thank you, kind sir. Now help me on.” She giggled a bit.

Without a moments hesitation, or even acknowledgement, Gary had her up on the horse. However, what she didn’t expect was Gary climbing on the horse behind her.

“Excuse me, this is a one person pony. Just what do you think you’re doing?” She said as she shoved him off the pony.

“Hey now, that’s not fair. You mean I have to walk?” Gary said, kicking at the ground.

Princess Zerabitu just smiled, “You’re a big strong man, you can handle it. Now, let’s go and get those keys!” She yelled as she galloped off.

Gary had no choice but to sprint to keep a sight on her dust trail. In Hyrule Field, he found he was able to observe which direction she traveled in slightly easier. It seemed she was heading towards the town below that large mountain. The mountain they called Death Mountain. The town below it must’ve been Kakariko village then.

By the time Gary reached the base of the mountain, Princess Zerabitu had had herself a nap, and watered her pony. Gary panted with exhaustion, and was about to say something to her but swallowed his words.

“Good, I see you’re well rested now, shall we continue?” Princess Zerabitu again offered Gary her hand.
