Actually riddles should say all the details including that fact. Otherwise I can just say all the gamblers have 100% chance by just lifting the cone of their heads and looking at their colour, since it wasn't stated in the riddle.

The fact that it MUST be answered out loud means it is necessary.

All C knows is that the guy behind him has a 50% chance of knowing for certain. Other than that, before the question is answered, no one knows. Period.

So unless the proctor asks from right to left if they know what color they are wearing, no one is going to answer.

@Bold: By that logic, C could simply ask D what color his hat was, then tell them.

I simply knew the answer because this isn't the first time I've seen this riddle. The information that should've been specified:

- No communication between the ''letters'' is allowed.
- The ''letters'' are fully capable of deductive reasoning.
- One of the ''letters'' has to call out the answer.
