This is explained in two different ways in the manga that can be connected. itachi says his ems makes him an invincible immortal and madara talks to sasuke saying his chakra contributed to his long life
edit: looking farther back you think he is obito and not danzo like I originally thought so that explains some of your posts but all I said is still valid. they prove ( at least from what you brought up) that he can't be obito or danzo
and to top it off, I want to show why he can't be shisui(cause some people here thought that too) first of all, danzo and shisui have their eyes on the same side and other than that, itachi is shown talking to tobi only a little while after he killed shisui where tobi's hair is long(I realize it could be transformation jutsu but seriously if you want to bring that up, anyone can be anyone.)

I think that he has to be madara mostly becuase of the fact that I feel he cannot be any of the other one's that are commonly brought up for him to be.
and of course it is supported by the manga in many occasions including jiraya and the fourth's opinions.
show were in the manga its says that and ill believe you you dont have the proof i dont believe u ...u make these statements but u dont show any proof u just say it in the manga how about u give me some evidennce mabey a page for actual proof.

I totally agree. Some of these people are using the fact that I'm newbie to say that I'm just getting on thier nerves about not having proof. They keep saying what they say but I have yet to see any of thier proof.

Read chapter 386. Itachi explainns that Madara was an invincible immortal. My friend is the one who said Madara killed a hokage. He was typing for me and put that in there. And my bad. Itachi didn't say that, MADARA did. In here <http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/398/18/> as a matter of fact. And didnt you read this <http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/397/01/> chapter? Madara tryed to take off his mask in front of Sasuke but Itachi put a trigger in Sasuke's eye to ignite Ametarasu as soon as Madara showed even a small portion of his face so he could keep him away from Sasuke. As to why he's not showing his face to Kakashi, Yamato, and Naruto, I have no idea. Maybe he will in the next chapter or somethin...And yeah, Madara wanted to know how Naruto could change Nagato's mind so he wanted to talk to Naruto. He's cool when Kakashi called him Madara because he knows he is invinsible against them because he IS Madara.

doesnt tobi have the jutsu to pass through objests, eg in the latest of the anime. sasuke could not kill him with a physical attack
