Anyone know this?

The data set shows the test scores for 7 students in a math class.
Amit 88
Traci 76
Lee 54
Barry 83
Amy 92
Ling 95
Rachael 80
When calculating the average score for the class, the teacher claims that she should exclude Lee's test score because he was absent the entire week before the test.

Evaluate this claim by selecting the statement that best reflects why the reasoning is either correct or flawed.

1) The reasoning is flawed. Lee's test score is not an outlier and removing it would decrease the mean.

It's definitely not 1. What does it mean by "outlier"?
A value that differs too much from the others.

OT: That's more interpretation than math itself. Lee's score does seem to be an outlier, but it might be due to the fact that he was absent, or not.

Number 3 seems to be the most likely to be correct. But that would depend on some satistics definitions. And I didn't take statistics yet. Sorry.

I would say 2. Regardless of Lee's previous scores, even if this score is around his typical score, the score would likely be effected due to his series of absences. Had he not been absent the score could have been much better, or possibly worse (though unlikely).

But to be honest we don't know enough information to give an actual answer. We don't know if the others students had been absent over the previous week. We don't know whether the information on the test was from information from the previous week either.

With the information we have here, from what I can tell Lee is an outlier (since he is clearly 22 points off from the next closest person, while everyone else doesn't have such a gap). This means that the answer is either 2 or 3, which confirm it to be an outlier. Of the two, I would pick answer 2, but it could very well be answer 3 as well.

At least this is how i see this.
