Simple physics: if u take an extremely strong material (doesn't have to be stronger than diamond) like iron and molded it into a thin razor blade it could easily cut the diamond with some added force. Pressure is force times area so by using a very strong material and applying a good amount of force on a small portion of the diamond it can easily be sliced.
