and this is what I say always in these threads... different purposes.

about the random battles/encounters. it really depends on the "random" word. what type of encounter is that. can you track your opponents before they ambush you or not. can you measure your opponents skills or not.
if you have the sharingan you can fight better in battle.
if you have the byakugan you can avoid the battle.
also I won't go in details about the fights, you all know very well how they fight.

also sharingan users can be tricked in a close combat fight. the only thing you need is blind him or distract his attention. for example get as close as you can and start a hit from the right, now he is looking at right then hit him from the left. but I think just like in the Hinata vs Neji fight, for the Hyuugas don't really need to direct hit on the opponent. when they attack or defend they only need a little move and touch the opponent and bamm 1 chakra point is closed.

the only thing that separates them is the fact that the sharingan can be evolved to ms, ems and rinnegan. this fact alone puts the sharingan above the byakugan.

i was just about to create a thread on this lol, if you go back and look at the chunin exams, it lays everything out for you about the B and S. Kakashi states himself that Sasuke would not be a match for Neji, the B surpasses the S just like you stated in your post. Kishi seems str8 to the point about stuff in his manga (for the most part) and during the exams you find out alot...(page where kakashi makes statement)

We also know that a few important areas, Sakura surpasses Sasuke and Naruto (with the chakra control and stuff, dont flame me...i know shes also not a match) and Ino was considered one of the finest female genin of the 11 so she isnt useless...we just havent seen her really in action besides fighting over Sasuke. Ten Ten deamed powerless against Temari and nothing was stated special about her so she would be one of the most useless characters (sad for her i like her lol)

Last thing is, Kakashi also mentions that the Hyuga is the oldest and greatest clan in the leaf...we havent seen shit from them (Neji, Hinata and other B users) in the whole manga (hardly) for them to be that powerful there has to be much much more to the byakugan! that has to play a key into this war somewhere....not to mention if you think about it, the S and B are like opposites of each other. Where the B can see openings to chakra and cut them off, the S can copy moves after seeing them once kinda thing, the S was cursed, we havent seen that with B..sorry im ranting...alotta thoughts and theories are coming out...

But, then again, the hyuugas have taken certain measures to keep the byakugan from being stolen. The uchihas were all wiped out at the time and he couldn't go for itachi's sharingan so the only alternative was the sasuke's sharingan.

Orochimaru's goal was to master every jutsu on the world. for this he needed the sharingan.
