I am British and I can tell you for the most part that the typical accent is not nice.

I don't know if you guys know, but there are loads of different British accents and some are as coarse as they come (Yorkshire, Geordie, Brummie).

The "typical" British accent as the rest of the world would know doesn't exist and every time I see an American film/programme portray as such, I want to stab the producers and claw their eyes out.

I was gonna post something similar to this but I didn't know how to explain it. But I know what you mean, the average person who is not in the media doesn't sound as nice.

There is even a movie where this rich British guy tries to teach a British girl to speak and act properly. But her accent was just terrible.

In regards of how somethings are written and pronounced its due to the people in charge way back when the country was coming of age and trying to establish itself.

Most readily avaiable example most are probaly aware of is our differing way of spelling Color (US) Colour (UK)

Under no circumstances is the English spoken in the states a "slang" of the English spoken over there.

That is just another stereotype like ones mentioned above about how British accents are portrayed in the media here in the U.S.

i read somewhere that the english accent only got invented after the formation of america. that originaly the "british" accent was the american accent of today and the british high society invented a new accent to differentiate themselves from common people.

some people say that shakespere sounds better in american accent then in english.

so really (if this is true) the british only have their sexy accent because they felt jealous :p

They do have something in common - they're both shitty languages.

You know what I always wanted to see?
A Cajun from the bayou try to have a conversation with a pykie or a cockney.
I don't think anyone would understand a word of either.

You should study American/British history.

it's there on my list, but i have too much history/science stuff to read about to do that anytime soon.

the "i read somewhere" and "if this is true" weren't enough to explain i'm not an expert and this might be wrong?
