Bootable CD

I want to install a Debain Linux OS, and I need to burn the image to the CD, so I can boot it. So far, I've been booting using the Copy Disc option, but everything apart from XP failed when it came to installing, so I want to know what's the best way to make a bootable CD with Nero.


1) Double-click the .iso and burn it via CD image:

2) Mount the .iso in Daemon tools and use Copy Disc:

I also want to know if burning the CD with the lowest speed possible actually helps.

So wait, you managed to burn the ISO, and it isn't booting? Are you trying to boot it from windows?

All you should have to do is reset the computer after burning the ISO, change to boot order to your CD/DVD drive first, and then the disk should boot. Of course, if your computer came preinstalled with windows, chances are you'll have to resize the windows partition or overwrite it completely.

If the ISO isn't booting at all, maybe there was something wrong with the download? Try downloading the ISO again maybe.

As for the slowest speed, doesn't really matter in my experience. I usually go with the default selected speed. Anyway, I've been using flash drives for my last few Gentoo/Funtoo installs.

You misunderstand.
I've successfully burned and booted several OS's so far (WinXP) but any other OS failed, due to unknown issues, thus laying waste to time, data and money, and I don't want that to happen again. I considered my burning method to be the cause, (copy disc) and am currently looking for an alternative way to burn the image to the CD.

After a bit of research, Windows doesn't natively have the ability to burn images. And imgburn seems to be recommended on some other forums. I don't know too much about windows or windows software. All you have to do is burn the ISO as an image though, and it should be ready to boot from there.

Which version of Debian are you going to be using? I'd honestly recommend you go with Gentoo, as the install alone will vastly improve your GNU/Linux understanding and capabilities alone.

I have basic Linux Knowledge, I've used Ubuntu in the past, time to see if it helps.
And I heard that Debian is a little more user-friendly than Gentoo.

No. it's just a net-installer.

well max speed for burning an OS is not what i heard is recommended.....
apart from that me having issues with burning as well........and i used the standard windows copy files to CD option......well it would burn nicely and then halfway through installation it would say corrupt file and terminate the process....???
and about debian is it virus prone like windows?
for i have a antivirus program that works on windows and may be linux so will it work on debian???
