Bonsai Island

Bonsai Island is known for the high quality of its beer. Many breweries and pubs are located in the villages and towns here due to the fertile volcanic soil that characterizes the island. A single shard fortuitously struck only one brewery on Bonsai and luckily with zero casualties, but the resulting chaos and cleanup allowed it's many competitors to swoop in and fill the vacuum, and steal the former brewer's recipe. Underground volcanic activity has left the island with thick deposits of tephra, which has since weathered to rich soils, and it naturally cools the waters of its many small lakes and streams. The villagers named them ‘foam lake’s because they seem to perpetually be covered in a light froth as a result of the heat. On the island’s eastern side there is a large forest entirely made of bonsai trees; a popular tourist destination from which the island gets its name.

Mission: Set up camp, Set up a secure camp
Summary: Arriving on Bonsai Island, Grimmjow takes time away from the Main village, however, late at night, he senses a large build up of chakra, spurring him to set up the camp a little better.

Grimmjow left Feodosia with plans to head into the land of fire, however, after finding out just before leaving that the bounty he was going to capture had already been handed in, ruining his plans. Opting out of that plan, Grimmjow decided to head north, into a small cluster of islands, heading to the Bonsai islands and deciding to make his way up through them, to explore a bit more of the land of water. Due to his plans being ruined, Grimmjow arrived in the Bonsai Islands late in the afternoon, as the sun was setting. A little further north, Grimmjow could sense a cluster of people, all with small chakra reserves, and a few larger ones spread around. This wasn't a full sized village, but it was large enough that it had a trade happening, and had ninja as protection, which was saying something in comparison to the other smaller towns Grimmjow had been in as of recent. However, due to the fact that this village did have some kind of protection, Grimmjow decided it would be best to camp out for the night, as a stranger with his level of chakra arriving randomly to the village could stir up the wrong kind of trouble, and it would be better to go in the day time as it would be less suspicious. Grimmjow had arrived on a small secluded beach, next to a large over hanging cliff face, and that looked to be the best place to rest for the night. The cliff face gave him the safety of only having one way to attack, and the cliff gave him an escape route if he needed it.

Walking around the small thicket of tree's, Grimmjow arrived in around twenty minutes, and the sun was almost gone behind the horizon as he did. Luckily for Grimmjow, the Bonsai tree's on Bonsai island where plentiful, and this area wasnt too thick with tree's, so they weren't as big as the larger forest on the eastern side. Using Muramasa, Grimmjow carved down a few tree's, just enough to light a fire, and using his Basic Fire Ninjutsu, he lit a small camp fire on the edge of the cliff. The flames illuminated little, but it mattered not, as Grimmjow never deactivated his Chakra sensory anyway. With his fire lit, Grimmjow used his Adamantine release to create a small circular seat, a few meters back, and also a small spit to rest over top. From his pocket, Grimmjow produced a small pouch wrapped in a banana leaf, a small parting gift from his friend the merchant. Inside, small chunks of raw meat sat, just small enough to create a kebab. Grimmjow had nothing else on him, so he simply used a little more Adamantine chakra to create a small thin spike, putting the meat on it and spiking it into the ground to cook over the small fire. With food on the way, Grimmjow had to now make a bed. Grimmjows only issue here was, he had no jutsu that could create anything soft or nice to sleep on, and was stuck using the foliage around him. Drawing Muramasa, Grimmjow jumped up to the nearest tree and began to hack away at the leaves, getting the fullest and bushiest he could see in this low lit darkness.. As he chopped, Grimmjow dropped the leaves down to the ground until a large pile formed. Happy with his effort, Grimmjow leapt down and dragged the pile over to the fire. Using an old technique a previous friend had taught him, Grimmjow used his Earth chakra to make grave in the ground, around half a meter deep and two meters long. Grimmjow then dropped all the leaves and branches into the grave, using his body weight to crush them down until the bed well compressed. This technique was known as a dug in bed, keeping the person off the ground, but behind compacted enough with a softer material that it felt like you where sleeping on just leaves, not the ground. The sea breeze was light, chilly, but not cold, so Grimmjow, once again with Earth chakra, made a small wind breaker, with a few holes, to allowed the breeze to flow through, before sitting down in his chair once more and grabbing his now cooked kebab.

The night's on Bonsai Island seemed silent. No birds, no insects, just the sea breeze. Grimmjow sat meditating, replenishing his chakra and generally just relaxing his muscles, as he was feeling quite tight around his shoulders and lower back, however, his focus was broken when he sensed a large surge of chakra to the east. Bonsai Island was small enough that Grimmjow could keep tabs on the whole island, and from seemingly no where, a large group of strong chakra signals appeared, and where moving towards the village. Grimmjow sat in this position, tracking the chakra surges for well over two hours. In the distance, mild screams could be heard, and Grimmjow sensed fire chakra being used, before the group vanished once more, the chakra signatures seemingly vanishing. This was worrisome to Grimmjow, who stood up and began walking around his camp. A large group, at least forty people, all at least Chuunin or lower, two jonin levels, one even slightly stronger than that. All of them had stormed the village, and somehow vanished from Grimmjows chakra sensory, with either chakra suppression or a barrier, Grimmjow didn't know. What he did know, was that there was a bunch of people running around this Island that could hide from Grimmjow, and he didn't like that. Walking about 30 meters away from his camp, Grimmjow began laying Fuuinjutsu traps on the ground, spreading them out by a meter or so, laying them in an arc around his camp. An explosive style trap, used to disable any attackers. With that set up, Grimmjow took a single Kunai, marking it with a seal, and throwing it towards his camp. As the Kunai hit the ground, it set up a spherical barrier around the camp, spreading five meters from the Kunai in all directions. However, With Grimmjows Chakra sensory being unreliable, he knew he had to set up one more barrier. Producing another tag while inside the small barrier, Grimmjow set up a long range detection barrier, which spread just far enough that the exploding tags radius wouldn't hurt the barrier. Even still, Grimmjow wasn't fully satisfied, biting his thumb, Grimmjow summoned a dual headed snake, and told it to scope the perimeter till the sun rose. Being just slightly larger than Grimmjow, the Snake slithered off, using the tree's to dodge the exploding Fuuinjutsu seals. With all this set up, Grimmjow sat up for a few extra hours, but the chakra signatures never returned. As the moon was almost peaking, Grimmjow decided it was time for sleep, and lay down in his dug in bed, drifting off the sleep rather effortlessly after all his chakra usage.

Mission: Custom, Investigate the events of the previous night.(c)
Summary: Waking up to no attack, grimmjow heads into the village to find out what happened.

Waking up to the sun rise, Grimmjow noticed non of his traps had been triggered, nor had the snake come across anything as is slithered back into view. Dispersing the summon, Grimmjow, using Earth ninjutsu, returned his camp site to the best of his ability, back to how he had found it, at least to the best of his ability. Doing a quick scan with his chakra sensory, all seemed normal, as Grimmjow made his way to the village, however, he was stopped at the gate by one of the guards. From his chakra levels, this one was around a Chuunin, but Grimmjow didn't recognize the chakra signature from last night, and paid no mind to him. The guard asked a few questions, What Grimmjow was doing here, which direction he came from, his location last night, all the standard investigation questions, which allowed Grimmjow to hone in on the fact that last night had infact been some kind of attack. With the guard satisfied, Grimmjow walked into the village, and right away, he saw the remnants of the night before. A large wooden building had been burnt to the ground, but at the same time, the ground was wet with something, it wasn't water, it was too dark, however, as Grimmjow stood staring at the liquid, a pair of women chatting walked past, answering his question.

This is horrible, another beer store house taken out, what do they want?

The womens talking faded out as they walked away, but Grimmjow had his answer. This was a building used to store kegs of beer, and it had been burnt down. What reason could there be to burn down a keg house, was the question playing on Grimmjows mind as he continued down the main street. A few other buildings had been scorched, but nothing that couldn't be repaired within a day, which begged the question, why only the keg house. As usual Grimmjow headed into a local pub, eavesdropping was always a good way to gather information. As Grimmjow walked in however, he was met with a few peering stares, and the groups sat in huddle groups, mumbling amongst themselves. This was truly weird, one of the leading beer producing islands in the Land of Water, yet everyone here was somber, and quiet. Something that really going on here, and Grimmjow swiftly walked up to the bar, bought a beer a sat down by a window, staring out into nothing. In front and behind him, two smaller groups of men mumbled to themselves, huddled up, however, Grimmjow was still able to hear them, even through hushed tones. Sitting there for around twenty minutes, Grimmjow then stood up and left, gaining enough information to start looking into things.

It seemed that six weeks ago, a group appeared from the bonsai forest, at first, they killed half the guards in the city, and vanished again. A week later, they returned, burning down the hops and barely plantation, before once again, vanishing. Two weeks went by, and they came back, burning down three taverns and killing four more guards, before vanishing. Three weeks this time, they appeared and burnt down the Keg storage, before vanishing once again. They had a pattern, as it seemed the time they showed up kept increasing. However, if they where to keep the pattern, it would take another four weeks until they appeared again, time Grimmjow didn't really have to waste. Waiting four weeks for a band of...well he didn't know what was not going to work with him. The village had more guards stationed than the night before, Grimmjow could sense the increase in chakra in the village spiking. A few guards where using ninjutsu to the west, for what he didn't really care, but he did want to ask a few questions. Wandering around the small town, Grimmjow had to find a younger guard, someone naive, likely to talk too much, and after a half hour of wandering, he found one. Stationed by the south gate, a young boy, maybe fifteen, stood with his guard outfit on. His chakra levels indicated he was likely on his way to being a Chuunin, but was still a genin. Grimmjow walked up, introducing himself, and talking casually for a while, luring the kid in. The kid had little to say, the weather was good, he'd come from one of the northern islands at request of the Lord here, he had only been here a few weeks, he had fought some of the bandits from last night, which was surprising, as most of them where high chuunin level, so Grimmjow was somewhat impressed that he survived. However, as the conversation kept on, the boy finally let information slip.

We don't know where they come from, but its always the east gate. They just seem to appear, even our chakra sensory barriers dont pick them up until they're right on top of us. It's strange, they don't harm any citizens, just the Guards and the taverns and such. Then, they vanish back into the east and we lose them.

The two conversed a little more, Grimmjow gaining a little more information about the night before, before leaving, heading towards the East gate. That was the only consistent information Grimmjow kept hearing, "They come from the east". That was the first place to look. Heading over to the East gate, Grimmjow immediately spotted the seals, similar to the ones he used, and the barrier. It seemed after the second attack, they set up a barrier only on the East gate, yet it was still bypassed. Grimmjow had a few idea's of how it was bypassed, and when he stepped out of the barrier, he realized what had happened. To most, it was nothing worth looking at, however, Grimmjow had seen use of a similar technique in his time, utilizing Kunai to not break a barrier, but to bend its shape, allowing one to pass through it without detection. At the very edge of the barrier, three small kunai holes pierced the ground. It seemed whoever lead this group knew how to bypass a chakra sensory barrier, which made Grimmjow worry. Maybe they had come up and looked him over last night, he hadn't thought to check his own barrier, which he would do later on, just to be sure. Learning they could bypass barriers, Grimmjow walked up to the edge of the Thick Bonsai forest, the main attraction, which right now, was off limits due to the attacks. Something about the forest was off. As Grimmjow stood at the edge, his sensory felt like he was peering into darkness. Absolutely nothing came back from the forest. With a flick of his wrist, Grimmjow threw a small clump of Earth produced with chakra into the forest, yet the moment it passed the thickets threshold, the chakra from the Earth vanished from Grimmjows Sensory. Somehow, this entire forest was one giant Chakra suppression technique. Had this been done by the leader, or was this similar to the Jaguar forest Grimmjow had trained in, where special conditions where placed. No, that couldn't be right, no tourists would be allowed in if that was the case. This had been set up, and this was one hell of a barrier, as this forest was massive.

Inhaling deeply, Grimmjow stepped into the forest, and similar to outside, he felt nothing. Sensed nothing. Smelled nothing. Heard nothing. It was like being in a genjutsu. Taking two steps back, the world rushed back, the noise from the village, birds, the sea breeze, all returned at once. This was bad. A massive barrier erected around this forest, used to completely remove senses, even chakra enhanced ones, a forest that could hide over forty possible ninja, that where attacking without any known reason. At this moment, Grimmjow really knew little. All he knew was six weeks ago, a group appeared. They have no known objective as of right now, they could fight off trained guards, without causalities, they could bypass sensory barriers, and had a entire forest which removed the senses like a genjutsu. Even if Grimmjow wanted to, right now, he couldn't track them. One thing he did know though, was they would likely come again, but would it be four weeks? Grimmjow had to take a gamble. Making a handseal, he summoned two clones. As the clones appeared, they both utilized Water ninjutsu, masking their presence and blending into the world around them. The plan, was to monitor the forest, taking shifts for sleeping between the two clones, to see if anyone came out of the forest. With the clones in place, Grimmjow left them to their stake out, heading back to his camp. After looking around his barriers, no marks where found in the ground, so the group either didn't come looking for him, or didn't care enough to, but this gave Grimmjow the element of surprise. Heading back into the village, Grimmjow posted up in a small tavern with a few rooms, it was cheap, nasty, and smelt of beer, but it was close to the Eastern gate. Grimmjow then Activated his own Chakra suppression, making himself mostly invisible to anyone looking, and waited. The moment the clones found something, they would track it, and disperse, relaying the information, but for now, Grimmjow had to wait.

Mission: Torture a suspect
Summary: 4 days pass before a potential suspect emerges from the forest, Grimmjow captures and interrogates him.

Waiting is what Grimmjow had to do, as four long days passed. Not wanting to draw any attention to himself, Grimmjow sat and meditated the entire time, not once leaving the room. Occassionally, he had food brought to him from the tavern downstairs, but for the most part, he survived on rations and will power alone. Risking himself now would make the other days a waste, but it seemed it was all coming to an end soon.

Meanwhile, at the Eastern gate, Grimmjows invisible clones where taking turns sleeping and staking out the village. Both clones kept their chakra sensory active, and they too, waited the four days, until finally, something happened. At first, the chakra source was small, just faint, but as it got further and further away from the forest, it became stronger. Still not jonin levels of chakra, closer to a fresh Chunin, but strong enough to use ninjutsu, and that was how the clones located him. The person did not walk out of the forest, instead, using earth ninjutsu to travel underground. The two clones locked onto his chakra signature as it stopped at the barrier. Grimmjow had already determined that the barrier did in fact go underground upon his inspection, and the clones waited patiently to see what would occur. After a few moments, the barrier faltered, for a mere moment, just long enough for someone to slip through, before it reestablished itself and continued as normal. It seemed this group had a way to bust the barrier even while using ninjutsu. Following the chakra source, the two clones tracked the man halfway into town, before he stopped behind an old bakery. Still invisible, the clones watched from short range as the man bust through the ground, before returning the earth to its natural state. This was a jutsu Grimmjow was familiar with, but the clones knew that this didn't really matter. With a single handseal, one of the clones locked the man into a simple genjutsu, where feathers would begin falling from the sky. As soon as the man locked eyes with the feathers, he would start to feel drowsy, stumbling back and fourth, before falling face first into the ground, passing out. With the target acquired, the Clones grabbed the body, hauling it over one of the Clones backs before extending the invisibility technique over the clone and hauling it off to the rendezvous point. Once the clones arrived, they tied the body up, and one of the clones forcefully dispersed itself, sending all the information to Grimmjow whose Eyes snapped open as the information flooded into him.

( Nehan Shōja no Jutsu ) - Temple of Nirvana Technique
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, placing all the targets in the area under an illusion where feathers appear to fall from the sky. This slowly puts the opponents to sleep after one turn.

With the information relayed to him, Grimmjow left the tavern, leaving a few coins on the desk as he left. Swiftly, Grimmjow made his way to the burnt down storage area. Over the last few days, it had been left for investigation, and the guards where awaiting a report to come back, so it was currently off limits, making it the perfect place to interrogate someone. The cellar was heavily padded to keep the room at the right temperature, so the screams of what was about to happen wouldn't be heard by anyone that wasnt down here. Using his speed, and a few distraction techniques to draw the one guard away, Grimmjow slipped into the cellar, where his last remaining clone was waiting. As he entered, the clone whispered something to Grimmjow and handed him 3 pill looking items, which Grimmjow slipped into his pocket. The man was still inside the genjutsu, which made things easier. Walking up to the body, Grimmjow placed his hand on the mans chest, and activated his dark release seal, absorbing almost all the mans chakra, leaving just enough to survive on. With that threat taken care of, Grimmjow released the genjutsu, and slapped the man, Hard, across the face, waking him up in a jolt.

Where...WHERE AM I! WHO ARE YOU!WHAT'S GOING ON!

Grimmjow smirked, as his cloned leant against the wall to the side. It had been a long time since Grimmjow interrogated someone, and he was a bit rusty, but he was confident he could do it effectively, without killing the man, hopefully. Walking up to the man, Grimmjow bent down, putting his face right in the mans, before speaking.

My name, is Grimmjow. You're underneath the keg storage house you and your friends burnt down, in the cellar to be exact. And iv'e a few questions i want to ask you.

As Grimmjow made mention of the keg storage area, the mans pupils dilated slightly, and a small amount of tension flicked across his face. The man knew what Grimmjow was talking about, his face couldn't hide his lies. It helped that the one captured was young, maybe not even an adult yet, likely easy to break. The two stood in silence for a moment, before the kid smirked, laughing, and then speaking.

You won't get shit out of me, see you round, Grimmj...

The kid paused. His jaw was moving slightly, as if his tongue was searching for something in his mouth. A few moments went by, before Grimmjow reached into his pocket, dropping the three pill looking items onto the ground before him before stomping them out with his feet as he spoke.

Suicide pills are such cliche. Did you really think we wouldn't check? Well, of coarse you didn't, until two minutes ago, you didn't even know i existed. Still, you won't be escaping this that easily, now.

Dragging a chair over, that the clone had brought down prior to Grimmjows arrival, Grimmjow sat down in front of the kid, resting his elbows on his knee's and his chin in hands as they interlocked, staring the kid in the eyes.

Iv'e some questions i want to ask. I'm not very patient, however, so let me explain how this will go down. I'll ask you a question, you answer, we move on. You refuse, i take a fingernail. You refuse again, i take another. A third time, i take the finger. We'll repeat this until you run out of fingers and toes. Afterwards, well, we'll get to that when we get there won't we?

The kid began to visibly sweat as Grimmjow explained how things where going to happen. From his ninja pouch, Grimmjow pulled out two kunai, throwing both into the ground at the kids feet. Standing up, Grimmjow walked over, placing his hand over top of the kids bound hand, and began talking.

So, question one. What you're name?

Something simple, yet, met with silence. A full minute past, and Grimmjow reached down for one of the kunai, picking it up and hovering it over the kids index finger on his left hand. Driving the tip into the base of the nail, Grimmjow flicked the whole nail off, sending it skidding across the ground as blood began to ooze from the kids finger. The kid grit his teeth as he let out a muffled growl of pain, but still sat in silence. Sighing to himself, Grimmjow moved the kunai to the next fingernail, repeating the process. Another muffled growl, as the nail flew off, but still, no answer. Already feeling frustrated, Grimmjow placed the blade of the kunai across the index finger, and without warning, drove the blade down, severing the finger entirely. This time, the scream couldn't be muffled as the finger hit the ground and the scream echo'd out into the cellar. However, to be safe, Grimmjow used his Fire ninjutsu, igniting the tip of his finger and holding it to the now open flesh wound on the kids hand. As the flames burnt the tissue, sealing the bleeding, tears fell from the kids eyes as the pain erupted through his body, more screaming, before the wound was sealed. Taking a step back, Grimmjow sat back down, as the kid regained his breath.

Ok. I dont care about your name, however, this is the easy part. I want you to know, you won't die here, not until i want you too. If you comply, i'll let you go. If you refuse, well, this will only get worse. Iv'e ways to revive you, back from the dead. I can heal you, and we can repeat this every day until you talk. You'll never escape it if you don't talk. Your friends can't save you, by the time they get here, i'll have killed you out of sheer impatience, so the choice is yours, talk and live, be silent and die.

Most of this was a lie, Grimmjow had never even seen Medical Ninjutsu in use, but he had heard stories. This time, without asking a question, Grimmjow stood up, drawing the kunai and slamming it into the boys right hand, inbetween the index and middle finger bone, before twisting it sideways, breaking the bones and dislocating the ring finger. With Grimmjows left hand, he slammed it over the kids mouth, slamming his head into the back board of the chair in the same motion, muffling the screams as he asked his new question.

What does your group want? Why'd they burn down this house, and how is there a barrier around the bonsai forest?

The kid was panting, catching his breath from the pain, which Grimmjow allowed, until the kid finally spoke, but it wasn't what Grimmjow wanted. The kid looked down, spat on the ground at Grimmjows feet, and spoke.

I ain't telling you shit freak. I can take whatever you can dish out.

Grimmjows eye's went wild as a malicious smirk crossed his face. His sadistic side was coming out, as he glared down at the kid with excitement. Grimmjow would have been lying if he said he didnt want the kid to be defiant. The more defiant he was, the more fun it would be, and it was obvious the kid saw this in Grimmjows face, as his cocky demeanor faded and his face went pale. Grabbing the kids shirt, Grimmjow cut off a large strip, twirling it into a gag, and placing it in the kids mouth, tying it off at the back of his head. Leaning down, Grimmjow spoke once more.

Wrong answer. Now, when you're ready to speak, just nod. Until then, let me enjoy this.

The kid screaming something muffled, but he couldnt speak with the gag on. Reaching into his ninja pouch, Grimmjow produced some razor sharp ninja wire, normally used to trip up people and cut their legs open, now, it would be used to skin this kids arm. Staring where the finger had been burn closed, Grimmjow began to shimmy the wire, slicing the flesh, and slowly, carving off a layer of flesh. The kid screamed behind the gag, but Grimmjow paid no mind, as he continued, towards the wrist, and then up, through the arm, shaving off a long sliver of skin before severing it just before the elbow. Going back, Grimmjow started at the ring finger, under the fingernail, before doing the same, severing a long sliver of skin up to the elbow. As he finished, Grimmjow let go with one hand, wiping the blood off his hand on the kids shirt. Without warning, with his right hand, Grimmjow thrust his fingers into the kids eye, ripping the eyeball out, and in front of the kid, crushing it in his hand, causing the fluid filled ball to ooze out between his fingers as the kid screaming in agony. Once again, Grimmjow channeled Fire chakra into his finger, and jammed it into the kids eye socket, sealing the bleeding flesh in his eye sealed as the kid began shaking violently and screaming. As the wound stopped bleeding, Grimmjow pulled his hand back, once again wiping the blood off on the kids shirt. By this point, the kid was nodding, agreeing to talk, but Grimmjow's other side had taken over, and he wasn't done. Waving his bloodied finger in front of the boy, Grimmjow spoke.

Not yet. Learn the punishment of defiance.

There was one more thing, Grimmjow had to do, to fully break this kid. Take the one thing every man cherished most. Signally to his clone, the clone moved forward, Adjusting the hand holds, and standing the kid up. Using the banisters, The clone tied the ropes strapped around the kids wrists up in the roof, standing the kid up just above the ground, hanging from his wrists from the ceiling. Then, the clone ripped the kids cloths off, leaving him hanging, naked, before Grimmjow. Snicking to himself, Grimmjow looked at his new target, mostly talking to himself as he glanced between the kids legs.

It's so small im almost doing you a favor. Now, hold still.

The kids one good eye lit up, as he nodded back and fourth, begging, behind the gag, ready to spill all the secrets, but Grimmjow wanted to break him entirely. Grabbing the wire once more, Grimmjow dropped to one knee, creating a small loop in the wire before securing it at the very base, having the entire section secured by the razor wire. Glancing up, Grimmjow smirked as he spoke, gently tightening the wire where it began to cut skin, the kids eye wide with fear.

Should have told me you're name.

With one swift pulled, the wire severed everything, screams erupting through the gag, as Grimmjow stood up, looking at his handy work. A few moments later, the clone sat the kid back down, and began closing the wound himself, Grimmjow wasn't going to touch it directly. The blood lose made the kid light headed, and after removing the gag, he began talking. Spilling information like a canary. Grimmjow was confident it was all truths, as the kids mind was far too gone to make up lies. With the information gained, Grimmjow drew Muramasa, and without another word, slowly slit the kids throat, watching the life leave his eyes and he cleaned the blade off. Turning to the clone, Grimmjow simply nodded, signalling the clone to disperse of the body. Grimmjow, on the other hand, went back to his camp near the beach. He had to process what he had learnt, and he had to clean himself up, as he couldn't be seen walking through town, covered in someone else's blood. Using the same technique, Grimmjow made himself invisible, and left the town, heading to the beach.

Lana felt extremely uneasy on the Bonsai Island. The place was just as much popular for its brewery as it was for its tourist sites. And Lana was a recovering alcoholic. So as you can imagine, the two didn't mix well. Naturally, it made her recall vestiges of memories from her drunken days. She hurried to leave faster than she arrived, and made a mental note not to visit here again, unless business required it or it couldn't be helped.

In regards to her last mental note, her re visitation was due to the latter - couldn't be helped. Her company on the other hand didn't seem to care much.

  • Setup camp [D-rank]
Summary: The tale of Mandos and his arrival at the Bonsai Island.

The Arrival

You must be registered to see images

The sea had been treacherous, the high seas and the storm had made many of Mandos ships into splinters, and among the wreckage you could find the bloodied remains of the crews of those ships. The mist did not help his case either, as it made it near impossible to navigate the sea ahead.

Mandos and his flagship, the Vatvargr, The Wolf of the Sea, had managed to navigate the treacherous coast, and made anchor at the shore of the island known as Bonsai. A few more of his ships had managed to make their way to the coast as well, as they created a barrier between the sea and the Vatvargr.

The morning after the storm had settled, Mandos stood within the captains' quarters staring out the green tinted windows towards the coastline. Several of his men, maybe a few hundred, had set foot on the island, having set up tents and built several wooden barricades, the mist low at the moment. The Vatvargr was protected in a circular camp made of ships and men on either side. The banners hanging high in the calm breeze.
The knock on the door was heavy, as it creeked open, Mandos did not care to turn, for he knew it was his Seneschal.

“Captain, the men are preparing to go inland, to search the island for the ones that command this place.”

Mandos turned on his heels, placing his cup on the table. “Don’t bother. The island is not a priority as of now. Instead the men should be focused on gathering provisions from the island, while scavenging the coastline for the remains of our ships.”

“Aye captain.”

The Seneschal left the cabin, door open, as the cold breeze entered it, he decided it was time to go on deck.

As he came upon the deck, all of his men greeted him, while they were hard at work, many going inland to hunt and scout, while other parties were running down the coast to scavenge the remains of the ships that had floated ashore. It seemed that for now the camp that was formed around the Vatvargr would be the optimal solution for him and the remains of his armada.

This post marks the beginning of my (our) mission using these storyboard elements:

  • Retrieve an important object [D-rank] - [Based on: Steal an important document (B-rank)]
Summary: The tale of Mandos and the retrieval of information to find the Lady of the Sea.

Shadow & Fortune
The soldiers from the nearby town had been hung on the sides of the galleons surrounding the Vartvargr, The Wolf of the Sea. The soldiers hung by their broken nexts, or by their feet, as blood dripped into the water below, as several sharks were circling the ships. There was a total of twenty-one guards whom had been brutally executed and hung by the sides.

A slow night by Mandos and his crew's standards.

At least since Mandos took command over the ship.

The rats had already begun eating from the men, some still alive and crying in agony. Mandos on the deck could see a rat was sitting on top of one of the men's boots, while gnawing at the soft meat of his calves.

As he watched over the beach, he could see that the soldiers whom had attempted to breach through the barricades were either dead or prisoners now, except for a few who were walking aimlessly across the sand, as Mandos disappeared atop the deck.

One of the men on the beach whispered, “Help. Me.”

The words were wet, squeezed up through a throat clogged with blood. The hooded man spun, hands reaching towards the weapons slung on his wide belt.

Incredibly, one of the men was still alive on the large pike stuck in the snad. The hooks stuck deep into his flesh. No way to get him down without tearing his skull to splinters.

“Help. Me,” He said again.

The man whom had walked past, paused, considering the man's request.

“What for? He said at last. “Even if I get you down from there, you will be dead by morning.”

The man crying and gurgling, as the other one approached, kicking away one of the rats, sending it out over the water. He crushed a second underfoot. They snapped a bit, but nimble footwork kept any from tasting his flesh, his every movement smooth and precise. He killed another three before the rest scattered to the shadows, sullen eyes glaring red in the darkness.
The man stood before the spiked man. His features were somewhat concealed by the torch he was wielding. However, the light of the moon suggested a face that did not reveal a smile.

“Death is here for you,” he said. “Embrace it, safe in the knowledge I will ensure it is final.”

He reached into his cloak and withdrew a silvery shimmering blade. A large one-handed blade with engravings of curling symbols and spiralling letters along its length, it resembled ceremonial blade. He placed the tip under the dying man’s chin.
The man’s eyes widened and his hand scrabbled at the hooded man’s sleeve as he looked out over the vast expanse of ocean. The sea was a black mirror shimmering with the glow of myriad candles, braziers atop the ships and lamplight warped through the green glass from the ship's quarters.

“You know what lurks over the horizon,” the man cried. “The Sea gives, but she also takes away. She has done it before, and she will do it again.”

He turned and hammered the heel of his palm against the flattened hilt of the blade, driving the sword up into the man’s brain. A last corpse rattle and the man's pain ended. The necklace fell from within the dead man’s fingers and rolled into the sand with a soft strike.

Working with the skill of one who had performed this service many times before, he sewed the man’s eyes and lips shut. As he worked, he spoke words taught to him a lifetime ago, words first spoken by a long dead king.

“Now the dead cannot claim you,” he said as he finished his work and replaced his implements.

“Maybe not, but we aren't leaving empty-handed, sure we aren’t," said a voice behind the hooded man.

He turned and pulled back his hood to reveal skin the colour and texture of an almost golden syrup, cheekbones that were angular and patrician. His dark hair was bound in a long pony-tail and eyes that had seen horrors beyond measure surveyed the newcomers.

Six men. Dressed in leather stiffened by blood, cut to display limbs of muscles wrapped with tattooed thorns. Each carried a serrated blade and wore belts hung with a variety of meat-workers knives. They seemed like petty thugs, however, he had encounter them previously, the guards of the nearby town.

Their approach had not been stealthy. Hobnailed boots, offal-stench and muttered curses had announced their presence long before they had revealed themselves.

“I do not mind a coin going to the Lady of the Sea, sure I don’t,” said the biggest of the guards, a man with a gut so prodigious it was a wonder he could get close enough to a man to gut him. “But one of ours killed Old John there, fair and square, sure they did. So that necklace is ours.”

“Do you want to die here?”
asked the now revealed figure.

The fat man laughed.

“You know who you’re talking to?”

“No. Do you?”

“Go on the, tell me so I can carve it on the rock I’ll use to sink your bones.”

“My name is Mandos,” he said, whipping back his long coat and drawing a pair of glittering swords made from the purest silver it would seem. In a burst and a slash of light the fat man had been swept from his feet, as a gushing slash was found where his grotesquely swollen heart had been.

Mandos second blade was slightly smaller, more finely crafted, and a searing flash of light came from the blade as it struck another of the guards in half from collarbone to groin.

Like the rats before, they fled, but Mandos picked them off one by one, combining his two blades into a shining bow, releasing arrows of piercing flames. Each burst of light was a killing shot. In the blink of an eye all six guards lay dead.

He sheathed his swords and pulled the cloak back around him. Others would be drawn by the sound and fury of his work, and he had no time to save these men’s souls from what was coming.

Mandos sighed. It had been a mistake to stop for the crying man, but perhaps the man he had once been was not entirely lost.
A memory threatened to surface and he shook his head.

“I cannot be him again,” said Mandos.

He is far too dangerous to let to the surface, even if it were to face the Lady of the Sea.

Back aboard the Vartvargr, the quartermaster had managed to keep the ship under management, as the men were hard at work, moving around the supplies gathered from the land, while few of them were atop the masts managing the sails.

In what seemed like a mere second, Mandos appeared in front of his quartermaster. Something that may have seemed unusual to most, but not him.

“Cap’n you returned,” he proclaimed. A crooked smile came upon his face. “Did ya find what you were looking for?”
Mandos walked up to him, as he threw a shimmering necklace through the air to him. As he caught it, he could see the intricate chains that resembled the flow of water, while the symbol upon the medallion stuck in the chain was a symbol of the Lady of the Sea. On its back, a drawing of an island.

“I did. They were so kind to come to me rather than forcing me to traverse the landscape to find them.”

“Ah. Do we set sail immediately?”

“No. We wait for morning. We need more supplies and more men, if we intend to sail there.”

“Aye cap’n.”
