Bleach: The Lost Order
EPISODE 6: Lifeless
The Captains and Goro stood at the edge of a rock cliff, looking down at the large complex of sandstone buildings that was Las Noches 2.0. Some of the Captains' mouths were hanging open in wonder at the city. There were so many Arrancar and Hollows walking around the city, going about their daily lives.
Goro: Surprised? Don't be.
Ragnaroc: But... I was sure we had... Didn't we-
Goro: You were sure that you'd killed all of the Hollows?
Ragnaroc simply nodded his head "yes". He was still staring in wonder at the city.
Goro leaned back on the cave wall near the edge of the rock cliff.
Goro: You of all people should know that yin cannot exist without yang. Light cannot exist without shadows. Shinigami cannot exist without Hollows.
Roku: So then you've all just been... hiding here?
Goro: Basically. The rock here is made out of special minerals that block reiatsu. That's why you Shinigami have never been able to sense our presence. As the strongest of the Hollows, it is my duty to stand guard at the cave entrance. That's why I attacked those Shinigami that were chasing you.
Emperor: That reminds me. Did anyone else notice how fast those Shinigami were moving? They weren't even Seated Officer rank, but they were able to keep up with our movements.
All of the Captains looked at each other a bit uneasily, as if they wanted to deny what Emperor had said, and yet could not.
Goro: There's a simple explanation for that.
The Captains turned their attention to Goro once more, snapping out of their self-concious trance.
Goro: Your hearts are weighing you down.
The Captains' eyes widened at Goro in a mix of confusion and surprise.
Kaze: What the hell is that supposed to mean? How can our "hearts" weigh us down?
Emperor: ...Sounds like some bad poem Rag might've written...
Goro: I'm completely serious. You, Shinigami, were naive. You had never experienced real loss on the battlefield. You were content living in your world of self-delusion - in your world without strife and sufferring.
The Shinigami bowed their heads, ashamed at themselves.
Goro: Now that you've seen your friends slaughtered, your hearts are weighed down with the burden of their blood.
Roku: How can that be possible?
Goro: You are weak. You are affected and controlled by your emotions. Under extreme emotional pressure, reiatsu gathers and collects within the heart, preventing your from fighting at your full power. Now, how do you think that we Hollows are able to eat each other to gain power without feeling remorse?
Goro points to his Hollow hole.
Goro: We do not have hearts. Why do you think we're called "Hollows"? We keep fighting at the same level, unhindered by the deaths of our comrades.
Ragnaroc: So what do we do about it, then?
Goro: ...You want revenge, yes?
Ragnaroc: ...Yes.
Goro: Well, then. We're going to have to... "unhinder" you.
The Captains were more cautious of Goro than ever, and did not move their gaze from him even for an instant.
Emperor: You want to cut out our hearts?!
Goro: I want to sever the connections that your hearts have to your reiatsu. It's an ancient technique called "Soul Dissociation". It's... mostly safe.
Emperor: Forget it. I'm not having a Hollow sever anything inside of me.
There was a brief silence, and all of the Captains looked seriously and sternly at Goro.
Goro: Tell me, Shinigami. What do you think of.. that?
Without turning around, Goro pointed outside of the cave and into the sky, which was now bright with the sun.
There was some sort of tear in the sky. It wasn't quite a Garganta, but more of a rip in the fabric on space. The edge of what looked like an island seemed to be slowly creeping out of the tear, floating in midair.
Roku: That's-!
Ragnaroc: It's cross-dimensional transportation... but I've never seen anything on a scale like that... What is that coming out of the tear?
Emperor: ...It's Soul Society.
Soul Society itself was being very slowly through the tear in space.
Goro: Are you still sure that you don't want to go through with the Dissociation?
The Captains looked at each other, each thinking the same answer to Goro's question.
Roku: We'll do it.
Kaze suddenly collapsed onto the ground, leaning his back against a wall.
Kaze: Stop!
The others looked worringly at Kaze. Goro simply stood and observed.
Kaze: Everything's been happening so fast! Yesterday, I was a Shinigami Captain! I was the head of a Division, and I was sitting comfortably in my quarters. Less than a day later, I'm a fugitive, I've lost three of my comrades, and now I have to get my heart severed?! What's going on, and why are we in this situation?! Why did Yammamoto suddenly betray us!
The other Captains appeared to feel the same way as Kaze, even though they didn't say it. The ordeal of the past day had taken not only a mental toll on them, but also a physical one. They all appeared older and even thinner to themselves than they had been the day before.
Goro: Isn't it obvious?
The Captains turned their attention to the Hollow.
Goro: Now that Yammamoto thinks he's killed all of the Hollows, he has nothing else to kill. The Gotei 13 was created to protect Soul Society from evil, and without Hollows, the Gotei 13 serves no purpose. The Gotei 13 is Yammamoto's life. Now, he's turned his sights on the other beings of this dimension.
Ragnaroc: You can't seriously mean-
Goro: Yes. Humans. Yammamoto wants to kill all of the humans. Convincing the Spirit King of this will be easy for Yammamoto. The King lost his ability to think sensibly centuries ago.
Ragnaroc: That doesn't explain why Yammamoto betrayed us like this, though.
Goro: Wow, you really are clueless, aren't you? What did I get through telling you? You are weak. You are controlled by your emotions. Yammamoto, Shunsui, Ukitake, the others, they have experienced loss. They know what it's like to have their childhood friends cut to pieces. Yammamoto knew that you inexperienced Captains would never follow his orders to kill the humans. So, Yammamoto did the only sensible thing and tried to kill you.
Kaze: He's completely insane...
Goro: Yes, he is. The man's life revolves around the slaughter of others. Blood is like fine wine to him.
Roku: ...He must be stopped.
