Well, hey everyone. I figured I'd try to get as many Author's Notes out of the way before you started reading, so here we go:

This is a story concept I've wanted to play with for quite a while (you'll see what I mean as the series progresses), but even though it takes place in the Bleach universe...it doesn't. None of Kubo's characters will show up, and I'm simply using the universe itself to tell the story. Because of this, the history will be a tad bit different, as I'm trying to do it with completely original characters. And, I'm also using some people from NB in the fan fiction - these people are mostly going to be people whom I worked with or inspired me from the old Bleach RP, but this is NOT an NB fan-fiction; it's more my way of honoring those few people. So, if you recognize those people, that's why.

That's really all I have to say. I'd really appreciate any kind of feedback or criticism you have no matter how simple or cruel.

With that, welcome to "Angel Feathers", and I hope you enjoy.
_____________

A world of darkness was present, with no light to be seen as far as the eye could see. Faint warmth could be felt from an unseen place, and voice belonging to a young woman who sounded sweet as honey could faintly be heard.

“Should we wake the Captain? It’s nearly noon….”

“Please don’t,” he thought, as he lay quietly on his bed, eyes closed.

A deep baritone could next be heard, his lower voice radiating strength and penetrating through the wooden door, causing him to be much more audible, despite the softness he tried to inflect upon his statement, “Minori, he’s been working hard the last few days. Let him sleep.”

“Thank you, Shin,” thought the man lying on the mat. The two people outside his door were his Vice-Captain Minori Reina, and his squad’s Third-Seat Shin Myiamoto. He could see them in his mind, now.

Short little Minori would be standing in front of his door, fiddling with the long braid on the left side of her head, the only long piece of her otherwise short, straw colored hair. She would be looking up with emerald eyes at Shin, who stood nearly two heads taller than her. His black hair would be in a clean buzz-cut, and he would be clean-shaven as always. He would be standing tall and straight, his arms crossed over his chest as he stood with an air of dignity.

With a sigh – he was already awake, it seemed – the Captain lifted himself up from his bed, making a point to yawn rather loudly as he stretched, so that his subordinates waiting outside knew it was okay to come in.

“Ah, Minori -!” exclaimed Shin as the sliding door to the Captain’s quarters opened, and the girl bounded in.

“Captain Arukasa! Good morning!” exclaimed the young woman, trying her best to stand at attention with a full salute.

“My apologies, Captain,” said Shin, with a bow, as he walked into the room, and stood next to Minori.

“Good morning guys. And just Keotsu is fine, you know that,” said the Captain, as he looked at the two Shinigami.

Pinching the bridge of his nose to fight off drowsiness, Keotsu quickly recalled the events that had transpired in the last few weeks. He – a Shinigami, was a dead person. Unlike others, though, when he was “reborn” as a Shinigami, he had full memories of his time alive. This made him unique among Shinigami, or Death Gods.

Shinigami were people within the Soul Society who acted as a sort of Military to maintain the balance of Souls that moved from the “Real World” to the “Afterlife.”

Up until a month ago, Keotsu had been the Vice-Captain of the Seventh Division. Then, after much review and scrutiny, Keotsu was deemed the most capable among the Vice-Captains to be promoted to the rank of Captain, and thus had a division created for him. This was not due to his strength, but, rather his ability to handle administration work, and his personality.

Therefore, Keotsu was now Capitan of the Thirteenth Division, causing the previous “Gotei 12” to become the “Gotei 13.” While he was allowed to choose two people he knew and trusted as his Vice-Captain and Third Seat, his squad was composed entirely of Shinigami who had recently graduated from the Academy. Therefore, he had chosen Minori and Shin – fellow Ex-Squad Seven members – to help him with is new division.

With the Squad’s Strength being represented by its number, with Division One being lead by the Captain-Commander himself, Keotsu – as Captain of the Thirteenth Division – was the weakest amongst the Captains, and his Division was the weakest among the Thirteen.

The amount of paper work – and the sudden responsibility thrust upon him – had been exhausting, and he had finally finished setting up all the administrative procedures just a few days ago. This was the first day of true rest he had been able to take in a while, and he missed the simple pleasure of indulging his capacity for sleep.

Lifting himself from his bed, he stretched his arms as he shook his head, causing his long brown hair to cascade down his back, before wiping the sleep out of his hazel eyes. Keotsu was extremely young for a Captain, merely 274 years old; due to the reduced aging that Shinigami experienced, he appeared little over 20 years old. However, his ability to recall his previous life appeared to have been more helpful than one would anticipate. Believe it or not, Shinigami understood little of the reasoning of the Living World. This gave Keotsu a unique perspective and insight that most Shinigami didn’t have.

“Well, shall we go see how our Squad mates are doing?” asked Keotsu with a smile, before walking over and taking his Captain’s Haiori in his hand.

Smiling – as he had refused to address his Division as their Captain until he could truly call the Division ready to be one – he donned the haiori before brushing his hair. Then, confidently, he stepped out of his room and went to greet his men.
