Re: Would you think this is 'Racist' ?

No they shouldn't... that's like a woman having to wear a burka if she goes to a Pakistan... :|

If they are supposed to be black because of the chimneys then make them look like they have ashes in their face, doing black face is just retarded

Still, you can't go without a hijab to Pakistan or build a church there, can you ?

Yeah but that's not okay

And Europe (especially Northen Europe) was supposed to be the most evolved countries in the world... your country is supposed to be a role model to others... this is not helping...

Doesn't really bother me, but if people are unhappy by it they probably should change the name. Murica has the same problem with the Red Skins, evidently Native Indians find it offensive.

That's true, but is it so much to ask for our people to remain our culture ? This is something our parents and grandparents grew up with, so did I. A lot of European cultures have already been banned, what's left for the natives ? :|

Race?

Re: Would you think this is 'Racist' ?

Yeah.. that's true, but it's still our country isn't it? lol.

It's part of the culture. Something we grew up with for ages.

Well you say our country ? that's just being racist.. do say this because you're white, because that's really racist if yes.

Black, white, asian, if they are born in the country.. they have the right to dislike something and fight for it.

That's like the indians kickin all the other people out of america because its their country smh.

Not talking about race here, there are plenty of African-Dutch people who back me up on this, and who also grew up with this holiday .

Well there are some cultures that don't fit the current world and should be in the history books but either for this case the answer is easy, make the Black Pete's face's actually look like this

Atleast they can change it.. by having another colors or completely removing the black face.
It's kinda weird that a boat full of black people arrives at the Netherlands with 1 white man on it.

This obviously refers to african people working in other countries and building houses and do slavery work.

Re: Would you think this is 'Racist' ?

Why when it offends a group of people for obvious reasons? lol

This subject is waaay too touchy.

Should we complain about how Santa Claus subjugates reindeers to his sled as a means of transportation? I bet PETA has some complaints there. (The fun fact is that PETA has actually complained about that) It's not used in a racist fashion and no one is associating it with racism aside from the people calling it racist. Children probably don't even have the capability to look at it that way yet.

I hate the entire concept of ''skin color'', anyway. The color of your skin is such a minor and unimportant appearance detail which doesn't define us in the slightest. We are all different in some ways, so everyone who is racist is just fooling themselves.

But to get back on the topic, as I said before, both sides are not understanding where the other side is coming from. I can see why you'd think this is racist. We dutch don't notice the so-called racist semiotic elements, because we see him as a good and friendly figure who simply gives around presents and candy.

We are not defending slavery. We are simply defending a tradition which is not meant to promote slavery or to hate on black people but a is a joyful festivity which spreads happiness. Doesn't that mean we have the right to be offended by the claim? Some people are attacking this holiday from a perspective it's not even supposed to be looked at.

My biggest problem with this is, their faces aren't like they are supposed to be in the story...

I saw on the internet that the dutch people refuse to give black pete another color, some people requested to make them green, purple blue etc. but they really wanted him black.. lmao that's just horrible. if Skin color is so minor why not change it.

Because we don't feel the need to act on a accusation which twists the entire point of the holiday. As I said before, try to look at it from our perspective.

Changing the color means we are accepting that it's more than a minor detail.

It's difficult to explain it, anyway. It's simply a loving holiday that we all have fond memories of. It would be hard for someone who hasn't experienced it first hand to understand. As much as I hate to say it, even some of my ''black'' friends have absolutely nothing against it.

What sounds better: Moving past this or changing it, thus further dividing the differences between us? Moving past this so-called incident would just show that we can grow as humans. Why do we have to associate everything with hate and difference when it's meant to promote happiness?

As I said before, I can get where you are all coming from, but that's not the correct way to look at this festivity. It's all about the principle of things.
