All female protagonists from Monogatari Series. Especially Oshino Shinobu and Nadeko Sengoku.

Touka and Eto from Tokyo Ghoul.

The Major from Ghost in the Shell, easily. I would throw Asuka Soryu from Evangelion in there, too (better written than Rei and Misato).

Ugh please no. Asuka is so overrated it ain't even funny anymore. Imo, Rei is best girl in Evangelion.

Ah jeez, how could I forget Madoka Magica??? Yes, Homura, a hundred percent!

She certainly is, and I don't like Asuka either, but she's by far the most well-written character in the series aside from Shinji. I don't really like Evangelion as a whole, but I acknowledge its brilliance and its impact, going all the way down to the classic characters.

Izumi Curtis if I have to chose one but I like all FMA women or most of the anyway. Female characters from Silver spoon and Kimi No Todoke are good too.

There are some random women characters in manhwas - Ruler of the Land has some interesting females ( even with fan service). Orange marmalade also managed to put more rounded female characters despite being a vampire romance story. It was nice to see them having friendships and talks that didn't include talk about boys or love interests.

There must be others that I 'm forgetting and will have to think over but yea few of them stick out. FMA is the usual winner.

Victoria and Integra from Hellsing, the major from Ghost in the Shell and Revy from Black Lagoon are ones that immediately come to mind.

Touka from Tokyo Ghoul started out as a great female character in the first manga where she was relevant but her role in :re seems to be little more than epilogue pairing fodder (a common fate of female characters in manga/anime).

Likewise Mikasa from AoT began as a potentially great female character but sadly never developed a personality beyond Eren.
