Personally, I find Tokyo Ghoul to be the best of both aspects. The story is dark, the characters are awesome, and so on. Another good one was Akame ga Kiru, which ended up bombing halfway through.

Fate Stay Night was pretty cool.

I was never interested in Tokyo Ghoul. Thought Ep. 1, 2 and 3 were boring and apparently it goes downhill from there, so I never bothered watching the rest.

Do you mean best in 2014 or all anime/manga as of 2014? That's really too hard for me to decide. I grew up in the 80s and 90s watching or reading DBZ, Gundam, Robotech, Transformers, Record of Lodoss War, Ranma 1/2, etc. Even as much as I like Naruto, the nostalgia of the others is something that new anime/manga can't replace. If you meant in 2014, then definitely Naruto; it's the only anime/manga I've seen this year. The anime has been mostly filler garbage, but the manga was really good.

Best in 2014-now. If I were to have said all time, it would have been the first part of Naruto.

I lied. I also watched Occult Academy. I really liked it. I don't know if I liked it better than Naruto though. I agree though, the younger Naruto was better than Shippuden. There was more emotion and depth to Naruto's character.

I suppose I liked Haikyuu!! the best.
Zankyou no Terror was good, although it wasn't exactly memorable for me.
As for Fate Stay Night, it has nothing going for it other than its brilliant animation and fight scenes.

Yes, Tokyo Ghoul and Parasyte is where it's at.

TG for manga, I guess.

Haven't been watching much anime and can't say Fate/Stay Night's anime since it's a horrible adaption which's selling point are the fights and animation unlike in it's original source where fights (still the same as in the anime) are it's weakest point.

The first season was good and the second season was really good. There were a few episodes that were a little bland though.

Who ever told you that apparently it goes downhill after episode 1 - 3 managed to successfully lie to you. Leaving aside the anime (which is a rushed adaption that branches off from the manga in season 2 despite reaching the same conclusion in the end), Tokyo Ghoul is okay'ish prior to chapter 60 and beyond. Worth the read and all, somewhat interesting, but not anything particulary good. It only takes off after chapter 60 with Kaneki finally accepting his situation.

If anything, it manages to become a lot better beyond first arc or two and is worth the read at least for Kaneki's characterization, over-all symbolism used in the writting of the story and some great plot twists every now and then.

As I don´t watch anime, I can only account for manga/manhwa/manhua. If I had to choose, it would be one of these four:

I really like One Piece, although it has its issues.

Kingdom has a pretty solid run as well. Love the politics in this one.

Feng Shen Ji was always epic, so hard to tell.

Ruler of the Land got me pretty good.

As I said, hard to tell.

For me top 5 in 2014:
1.Mushishi
2.Gugure Kokkuri-san
3.Ping Pong/Space Dandy
4.Shigatsu
5.Parasyte

Excluding older series I watched or any manga I read.

Well, apparently the pacing of the anime was awful near the end of the series.
