I really don't get why some people call it a "masterpiece".
I saw it yesterday and i was extremely disappointed.

The movie was boring and very stretched out, the idea of the good american hero is simply annoying after 3000 movies illustrating the same one-dimensional next-door-good american-who will save the day-person. Also it reminded me of Transformers and if you make me make this comparison you have really lost me -.-
What really annoyed me is that the whole Na'vis philosophy was ripped off from the Australian Aboriginal tribes' way of living (check the book Message from Forever (1998) by M. Morgan); the only difference: in this movie the Aborigines are tall smurfs. As for the "love story" I have one thing to say and I hope it rings a bell:

The 3D and the special effects are as good as they could possibly be; breathtaking and spellbinding. However, you cannot judge a movie by and for the special effects it has alone. 3D means nothing if all the characters and the storyline is 1D.

i agree, with you, you can't jugde a muvie just by effects. I know that well. But for me is good, cuz of the story, music, and actors. i don't see why you don't like it. Comparing it to pochahontas was childish, since the love stories don't have anything aliike. I like it very much myself. And pls, don't take this as if i'm offending you. Just expressing my feelings ^^

why would I get offended? We 're just talking ofc ^^

But it does have many similarities to Pocahondas indeed, that wasn't a joke.

1) The american hero invaded an unknown and unfamiliar place.
2) ...wanting to take advantage of the natives and use their grounds to gain the goods.
3) He was almost killed by a beautiful native girl
4)...which happens to be the daughter of the leader.
5) and also the fiance of the next leader to be.
6) Then he falls in love with her and she falls in love with him back.
7)The tribe drives him away.
8) He returns to save the day and
9) He becomes a hero
10) He almost dies but
11) Gets saved by her.

The above is the storyline between Pocahondas and J. Smith...and... :p

yes, there are explanations, but here is what i thnik about those you psted:
1)he didn't invade, he was there against his will , + he just obeyed orders --> tipical american marine
2)His boss wanted to take adavantage - yes the bos of smith wanted to take adavantage too, but in a different way - money - territory
3)In the Poca, smith wandered along, and found a girl - here he got lost, chased by an animal, and then SAVED by a girl.
4)true
5)true :p
6)true :)
7)he is not drived away by the tribe....and the girl trains him, which doesn't happen in Poca
8)not true
9)that is only AFTER he becomes the Toruk Macto
10)true
11)true

many things in common, but many different facts too.
i bet the producer is a fan of Pocahontas xd

I found the movie kinda boring... some parts were cliche. I almost fell asleep. :) So 3/10.

I wouldn't want to watch it again.
Such a low rating. :T_T:

Well I personally think that this is one of the best movies ever. Why? Because for me, it was hugely entertaining and that's a key factor. I usually watch a movie twice to form a solid opinion but I was blown away honestly by the effects and creativity of it all. True, it may not be original (lol @ the similarity to Pocahantas) in storyline, and actually the storyline itself is quite questionnable.

BUT as a die-hard LotR fan (in this case, the movies), I'd say that these two are exactly on the same level and I'm not afraid to even think that maybe in some ways Avatar was better. Haha I know a few people who would bash my head in for saying that, but I can't help it. xD The effects, the soundtrack, the way it made me go through several emotions at once was outstanding.

Sadly I did not see it in 3D but I'm sure that if I did, I'd be even more in love with it. It was a beautiful... heartwrenching... adrenaline-pumping movie, and I for one, will be more than happy to see it over and over again.

(And IMO, the Na'vi are secksi like shit. :|)
