I took an insta dislike in AoT the moment the hype began. By the time I started watching it, the first season was over and the hype was at its highest. What could I say, although I wouldn't be so harsh when judging the series, I do think it's an average series that doesn't deserve all its popularity.
>The story
I consider the plotline itself technically good, extremely poorly handled by the author IMHO. However, the extremely restricted landscape settings bring it down for me. The characters are always in the presence of the all mighty wall, or in the best case scenario in a forest. I do understand that the author must give the 3d maneuver gear landscapes in which it works properly, but this brings everything down for me.
Another thing I was told about the series was that it has tons of WTF moments. I failed to find any of those. The closest it ever got to a remotely surprising moment was Eren eaten, but that feeling disappeared as soon as the titan killing other titans has appeared.
>Titans
The most awful aspect of the story IMO. I don't care what the story behind those atrocities is, making all of them mindless beasts with the simple intent to kill human in spite of the lack of the necessity to eat at all made the show even more bland than it would have been if only the characters were boring. I can't possibly find them menacing, often finding myself laughing at their retarded design and faces when watching the series, rather than finding them a real threat.
>Characters
Another MAJOR LETDOWN for me. All characters are cliche-ish, one-directional, dull, bland, in short, I find all of them extremely uninteresting and boring. Their design won't help their cause either, all of them wearing the same piece of ugly clothing called an uniform. Out of the main characters, the one who outshines everybody else in term of blandness and uninteresting personality is the main female protagonist, in the person of Mikasa. She lacks literally any shade of personality, being driven by the sole purpose of protecting her obsession, Eren. Then again, it's a series full of boring characters, she just stands out.
>Conclusion
In the end, for me AoT is a 2/10. Whoever doesn't like this opinion, keep in mind those are only my two cents, no offense intended towards the fans of the show. Claymore was a show that was constructed around a similar premise, however, having a way more interesting world, to which captivating characters were added. Too bad it never got as many credit or popularity as it should have. I'd be too harsh to say it's among the worst anime ever. But it is in the most overrated anime ever undoubtedly, alongside its predecessor in terms of bland characters and illogical hype, SAO.
