It is probably the best anime I have ever seen(in terms of plot).. And I am saying this after watching FMA, FMA BROTHERHOOD, CODE GEASS, STEINS GATE, DEATH NOTE,COWBOY BEBOP, CLANNAD, CLANNAD AFTER STORY and many others which are widely considered as MASTERPIECE.

yeah man..
i thought i was the only one here lol..
i have read the manga..an absolute masterpiece..
its a psychological thriller just like death note.
i donot know why it is so underrated..
i heard anime takes time to draw you into the story..probably 20 episodes..that might be the reason.
but i loved it..there were some moments where i jumped from my chair and said "holy crap! what an amazing storyline"
it has a really confusing ending, which is why i loved it even more lol.

Johan has been noted as the best villain ever, and I can imagine.

An hbo series is supposed to be on its way for Monster, which might raise popularity... but I do hope it's done right!
What is it about & how old is it ?
Well it has little action compared to the more combat-centered manga/anime. The pace is usually the reason why somebody might quit the series. It tries to keep in touch with reality, with a possible exception of the antagonist although it's usually just symbolic. The plot's basically about a famous surgeon (way better than the others working there) who strongly believes in his morals, but gets punished for following them by the hospital, since he defies their wishes in doing so. He accidentally creates the "monster" in one of his choices, and decides that it is his job to kill the monster and right his wrongs. The past of the monster becomes clearer as time goes on, but you can say is not quite clear and is very open to interpretation by the end (making several theories). The series strives off the monster and "its" charisma x_x I love Urasawa's writing style even though I know it's definitely not for everyone

The manga started in 1994 and the anime in 2004... the anime is completely true to the manga so it only depends whether you like reading or watching

Definitely in my Top 10, maybe 5 in accordance with my mood. I just wish I could've appreciated it more when I watched it the first time, cause the plot really is absolutely brilliant, as is the titular "monster" Johan. Just read ANN's review of the series and you'll feel obligated to watch it, particularly the passage specifically about Johan. I swear, I get this huge grin on my face whenever I read it, cause I know they're absolutely right.
