If they, or at least someone of them, are/is alive, the most logical explanation would be Mabui. We know she was there and can teleport people.

Knowing how brilliant Shikaku was, being a strategist and all, I'm sure he was well aware that the enemy would at some point play "cat and mouse" and seek them out. I can't picture someone with that much intellect dying that easily.
