Hi, guys! 
I want to explain to you few things about the name of this guy:
His name written in katakana is リヴァイ and that's pronounced like this リ (RI), ヴ (VU), ァ (A) , イ (I) or RIVUAI. However, this character ヴ (VU) is relatively new character in katakana in Japanese.It can be used in combinations to make other V sounds. So, because of this, the name リヴァイ is pronounced RIVAI. Also if you think that I don't know what I'm talking about check episode 9 when we've seen this guy for the first time (in anime) and pay attention to this scene 0:30 :

So his name should be RIVAI and we were able to read only Rivaille or Levi. I'm afraid that the problem is in mistranslated names.
If you'd try to spell Rivai's name as Rivaille the Japanese pronunciation would be リヴァイユ Rivai-YU. And as you can see this リヴァイ and this リヴァイユ are not the same. So why did they write his name like that in the first place? Probably because they thought that author wanted to use French name. Rivaille is a French name.
Other popular transliteration is Levi and it is the closest European name to Rivai. Somewhere I read that author stated that he took the name Levi from 'Jesus Camp' for Rivai. And Levi is pronounced in Japnese either Rebi レビ or Revi レヴィ.
Conclusion: RIVAI リヴァイ is the real name of this guy.
