Danzo might be the most hated character in Naruto. And while I agree that he is an arsehole in a lot of ways he may be one of the most real characters in Naruto. He is not entirely evil, and not entirely good (and not misunderstood evil). His motivation for his bad deeds are way more understandable than for example Nagato and Madara who can only talk about how shitty the world is. They slaughter thousands to bring peace through control, not a very interesting motivation.
Danzo is a man who cared for his village but was not brave enough to fight for it directly. Scarred by his cowardice, he instead pulled the strings in the background to ensure that Konoha stayed strong. You can't always be the good guy like Hiruzen if you don't want to be overrun.
When the 4 kage confronted him with him trying to put KA on mifune he didn't deny it. He openly stated that he would do it again in order to protect the shinobi world, he would probably have been a strong leader for good or bad, if he'd not been caught.
He understood that the world isn't all happy and neat, and that If you're weak you will die. And the weak ones are the good ones (not true in current Naruto though but realistically that's true in a society like that).
I don't know, I guess I like him as a character because he's not flat like many other characters. Never rooted for the guy, still I didn't want him to die so soon.

Like Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. I wanted him to lose, but it was sad to see him die. A good character and antagonist was gone
