"Frankly, I don't quite understand why it happened. While the manga was being serialized, the only thing I wanted as I kept drawing was to make Japanese boys happy. The role of my manga is to be a work of entertainment through and through. I dare say I don't care even if [my works] have left nothing behind, as long as they have entertained their readers."

- Akira Toriyama, Creator of Dragon Ball
this quote, is the reason why i don't like dragon ball (and other mangas/animes like it). it was created without too much thought, with no greater intention then to make a simple children's story. and it seems this is what that Miyazaki person is trying to say, i think when he says otaku he means a spesific type of anime fan that only cares about fast fights and cool super moves and doesn't even pay attention to the story. the thing that people do in this forum a lot, where you take one character from an anime and another character from a diffrent one and you ask "who do you think will win?" is the eponymous of how low they regard those characters. the characters have no depth or backstory or thinking of their own or anything that makes them human and complicated. they are nothing but guys that can do cool moves and whoever wins is the better character.

anime and manga are a storytelling medium, and more then cheap entertainment for kids. i agree with Miyazaki that i want to see more Death Notes and Cowboy Bebops out there and for shows like Naruto to become more mature and finally get rid of silly faces and stupid remarks that i don't know why people laugh at.
