This threads probably been made but i was rereading some of the older manga chapters and came to this conclusion. Is there ever a successful Anbu member while their in anbu. I mean Anbu is so posed to be like the best of the best right, highly skilled ninjas. Why then do they always end up just being cannon fodder for the next big bad buy. Seeing the feats of the anbu, i can only assume that maybe Itachi becoming a captain at age 13 wasn't that big of an accomplishment. I wouldn't be surprised if kishi started showing them missing everything they throw shurikens at. I mean the most successful ones we have to go buy are Kakashi, yamoto, and itachi, all of them no longer in anbu. Just saying if hes gonna portray the Anbu as an elite group he should atleast give them some feats to back it up, not just use them as cannon fodder for the bad guys to make the named good guys look cooler.

Some of them (unknown names) showed their skill in Pain invasion arc vs summonings, & what about those 2 Danzou's body guards? And let's not forget about Sai. But ye, i get what u want to say and i agree almost completely.

anbu are not totally weak, if i recall, the anbu used some up scale jutsu against pain, and when oro attacked konoha. some of them are really good at fuinjutsu.

True. But I don't recall most anbu return healthy when they encountered some new foe or something.(Which will probably make up for another filler or seomthing..)Every strong foe they encounter, they lose against..EVEN if they are with like 5 guys.:flaw:

I was thinking to make a special thread about what i think on this "WEAK" thing, but okey, i'll write it here, in short.
They are not weak. As in all the "XXXXX is weak" threads are stupid - it's characters are not weak. You just comparing them to geniuses, to people who are born once in decades in all the villages.
Every year, in every hidden village the academies take and prepare shinobies. Think about it - there are classes of them every year.
In konoha you know only team 7 and kiba/hina/shino - on one year, and neji/lee/tenten on previews year. Now - how many are total? DOZENS actualy Where are they? They aren't shown in anime ore manga, or shown as a croud with no names.
THEY ARE WEAK. They are genin, chuunin. Some of them jounin, yeah. Some.
They die it this war, thousends of them! Look at division 3, which got hit by madara's meteor - instant death to a thousends of shinoby.
They are to be protected, actually, but they do their thing, go on missions and all.... But compared to them - anbu are pretty scary, i assure you.

The let the 3rd Hokage get jumped and die.
They suck! They are supposed to be S rank ninja who couldn't break a B rank barrier to help out the 3rd Hokage. Because of that they will forever suck.

I agree with you that it's not exactly fair to compare nameless characters against named ones. I mean of course a nameless guy has no chance of beating a named one, if he could win kishi would have taken the time to give him a name. But still just about everytime we see an Anbu unti sent to scout something they all get murderd without even putting up a fight. It'd be like the Navy seals getting their butts kicked by a group of 12 year olds every time the army sent them to do something. Anbu = good. However Plot no Jutsu requires them to keep getting beaten or else Orochimaru would have failed and pain would have been killed by NPC's

haven't seen rasengans in reallife, so i can't compare 12-year old with it to navy seals skills. Though if you give 12-year old AK-47....

If you want to compare it to real world, i'd say that andu could be something like cops. Have some skills, their duties are to solve problem. But they are not prepared to handle navy seals, should they meet them suddenly.
you get what i'm saying though right? Their soposed to be highly trained professionals but they get out done by the kids. It'd be like the corps getting taken bout by militia on a regular basis. Their soposed to be the elites the best of the best, I get that this shows been on a dragon ball Z slope since Shippuden started, but still if he's going to make an elite unit that gets taken out by literally everything they come up against it's just like the storm troopers in starwars. In the first part obiwon says something like Imperial storm troopers are the only ones capable of such accuracy. And throughout the rest of the 3 movies they fail to hit anything.
