I was exaggerating. Most characters we see have some sort of flashy jutsu for combat, while Anbu specialize in working in the shadows and most likely have skills that fit discretion.

Torune’s jutsu is pretty flashy, he turns into a poisonous toxic man upon contact. And Kakashi during his anbu days was up there with Itachi bad well as Shisui. Not to mention Sai and his unique ninpou art.

Special anbu black ops are basically high level jounin with a special set of skills that can execute a mission better than any run of the mill shinobi. Like some like Itachi joined the akatsuki as a konoha special anbu ops. Kisame was in his mist special team as well.

They are the next best thing to a kage level person in terms of status, all of them having their own special skills. That’s why Hiruzen grabbed a bunch of anbu ops to catch Orochimaru instead of basic jounins. The only ones that would be above anbus in power and not status are village heroes.
And even those village heroes are around kage class level at times.

Oh yeah, I just thought it was more about the "redshirt" nameless Anbus. And Torune is limited to CQC so I think it's fair to assume that he would also do better as a stealthy assassin than someone who fights in the open (where he'd get rekt by anyone with a powerful ranged attack).

Actually, introducing a group of high-ranked and supposedly skilled fighters only to have them completely overwhelmed and fodderized again and again as a cheap means to make other characters look stronger and more skilled is quite a common thing in fiction.

More commonly it is known as the "Red Shirt Syndrome".

He can still through insects like a projectile like any other Aburame clan member. But anyways I was talking about all anbus in general have some type of skill even the no name ones. Anbus are Special Assassination and Tactical Squad, they need elite training and versatility to the highest degree. Their position is second highest to the kage in the battlefield.

If Torune could control his insects like that he wouldn't need to strip. I think his bugs die quickly unless they're on flesh, or something. But in any case they spread specifically by touch (the filler stuff was iffy but even there, they were carried by the wind, they don't fly themselves).

Anyway yeah, assassinations. Meaning they were more of a rouge class than of warrior or mage :hint:

Dude anbu black ops are like today's modern day special forces such as greenberet, army ranger, and navy seal in term of the ninja world. They have all the skills and then some. I don't know what you mean by warrior or mage thing you're talking about but special forces started out at the front line warrior combat before reaching towards the level they are now.

We must remember that Kidomaru (without CS) effortlessly defeated 2 Anbu Black Ops.

You must be registered for see images

This isn't a very valid argument.

Why?

1) Worry for the Kage put them in a distressed situation

2) Due to distress they leaped into a hostile situation unaware of their opponents abilities

3) Kidomaru's webbing is strong as fk. You need chakra disruptive abilities to break it.

@OP

ANBU to me were nothing more than a division of the village where shinobi could serve. Doesn't mean they all were strong or that they all were weak. They were combat experts that had special roles in comparison to the other jounin of the village.

the obvious problem with ANBU was that they were left featless and subsequently became a punchline. In stories that don't have a friendship theme that drowns everything else out, they would've been allowed to put a few W's together here and there to justify the hype. They could've potentially been like the Sternritters if they weren't jobbed out so much.
