A trio did jack all to help Sandaime and then were *****slapped by Kidoumaru without an active Curse Seal.
One was totally curbstomped by Kabuto pre-Chuunin Finals.
A bunch of them were also owned by Kabuto pre-Chuunin Finals in hospital.

All they seem to do is to show how uber people are...sacrifices to show off Orochimaru's evilness or Kabuto's "Look at me I can own a team of so-called elite shinobi on my own"

They weren't. Being an ANBU is a job - they're used for secret missions and stuff. They're all around Jonin level, which is a requirement. As the series goes on, the level of Jonin becomes very standard, and eventually obsolete.

no they were hyped to be above jonin level but below kage they had the likes of kakashi and itachi amongst them but the rest were used as fodder for kabuto and oro so it like what the point of introducing them

They’re higher than jonin, they’re pretty high level among no name nin. Plus , let’s not forget kakashi, itachi, and Yamato where all in anbu, fuu, torune, and sai are all from an anbu “spin-off” and most of the other Kages right hand men/women are from their respective villages version of the anbu

Well to be fair, Fuu and Torune weren't supposed to be straight combat specialists, especially Fuu who was an expert trap maker according to the databook. They were probably skilled in intel gathering and assassinations and all that stuff. Which became irrelevant as power levels inflated :|

The Anbu were meant to be OP them getting low diffed is to highlight the level of the enemy. Also an Anbu unit likely has a field specialist not necessarily overall elites like Itachi and Kakashi.

I don’t think it was ever stated that they were the best of the best. Just that they took on the darker seedier missions that other ninjas didn’t like assasinating leaders kidnapping recovering clan dead bodies etc.

Most of them were skilled in infiltration, intel gathering, sealing and the silent kill. Barring the 4 named above, they were feared by reputation for the type of work they do.

No one besides Bm naruto’s level is mountain busting level and that’s only a handful of people that are capable of doing that. Some Kages aren’t on that level. :|

I was exaggerating. Most characters we see have some sort of flashy jutsu for combat, while Anbu specialize in working in the shadows and most likely have skills that fit discretion.
