So we already know that Karin was found by Orochimaru and that she was taken under his wing as many other people such as Kabuto. However, her case differs from all the other Orochimaru's people since despite the fact that she went with Orochimaru, she didn't wear the headband of his new village, which was Otogakure. The strange part is not this information alone but the fact that when the chunin exams took place, in contrast to other people such as Kabuto, she took part as a person from Kusagakure.

So here comes the question: since at that time she was under Orochimaru's protection and a member of his village, why in contrast to others clansmen of Otogakure, did she appear as a member of a complete different village? What was the point of the whole difference? Her village was burnt so it's not like that the headband she was currently wearing at that time was a sign of her actual village. Was she working as a spy the same way Kabuto did? Why would Orochimaru send a weak girl like her back to a dangerous task such as the chuning exams? Was all that a way to force her to unlock her uzumaki chains?

Or was it something else?

I really don't know, I just found these things peculiar and thought of bringing them up.

Kushina said the uzumaki fled to different parts of the world after they were attacked

Kusagakure is hidan's village if i remember correctly
Point is that Orochimaru specifically chose her to take part in the chunin exams not as someone from his own village but from some other one and "coincidentally" if Sasuke hadn't come in then, hier teamates wouldn't help her as they were also, "coincidentally" absent.

Maybe she was wearing the headband just cause or maybe she was apart of another of Oro's group. Probably was taking the chuunin exam to train or whatever it is for.
And as the guy stated above me, "maybe that how he found her"
He went back and destroyed his own village? Aw that's so cool.

I don't think Karin had been took by Orochimaru at that point.

Maybe it was during Orochimaru's search for Sasuke in the Forest of Death that the latter came across her, recognised the distinctive red hair and took her.

The simple conclusion as many have already come to is, she wasn't acquired by Orochimaru at that point. There's nothing indicating that Oro knew her before the chunin exams and the Uzumaki village was destroyed before or during the 2nd great Ninja War.

Who knows... Maybe she was not under Orochimaru's wing until this happened:

....who happens to wield the same headband.

If Orochimaru became her superior during these exams, maybe this makes sense.
