The Inn was a jovial place. But it was also a place where people met to have dark meetings, which is what Rokla was doing. He hated meeting this assassin but he couldn’t disobey his master.
“Hello Rokla. How are you?” a voice said, jolting him from his thoughts.
“Good Artam, you?” he stared at the assassin for a long moment. “Would you like something to drink?”
“ No. I won’t be here long, just to hear what I need to and leave.”
Rokla nodded he was glad the man didn’t want to stay any longer than he had too, shivers always ran down his spine when near him. “Okay the elf you need to kill is a ranger who lives 25 miles south of here. He will be a tough challenge he is very skilled with a blade and he is an excellent archer.”
“You speak of him as if I am a novice,” Artam said. “ I assure you he will be an easy opponent for me. I have been in more battles than you will ever see in your life petty messenger. Does he move around? One of my last assignments did that.”
“No, he doesn’t move around.”
The assassin left without another word. Rokla thought about how lucky he was to not be dead for what he said. Taking another drink, he led a barmaid upstairs to one of the waiting rooms.

Meanwhile in woods just outside the town…

The ranger the locals called Mist crouched as he watched two men walk out of a bar and follow a drunk man down the street. They weren’t drunk the ranger noted, a sign that they followed a man other than to just mug him. They picked up their pace as the man reached the end of an alleyway. One more man stepped out of the shadows and pulled him into the alley. One went into the alley and one man stayed out on guard.
Mist jumped and landed on the roof of a building. Crouch-walking he neared the men in the alley. “Do you know where he lives?” a gruff voice asked.
“Na man I don’t I swear he lives in the woods is all I know,” a second voice answered, this one a little slurred because the speaker was drunk.
“ Told you we shoulda asked him before he was drunk,” a third voice entered in.
There was a popping noise before a THUD! Mist knew what happened. The men were done asking questions so they killed him. The group then preceded to head towards the forest where they would kill one more person.
Mist ran ahead of the group, a shadow against shadows. He followed the group for a couple of minutes before running ahead. He headed to his camp to get everything packed. Less than a minute after he hid his things in the trees, the men showed up, weapons drawn. They looked around a little before meeting at his fire pit.
“ He was here not long ago. The fire pit tells you that. He must move around every now and then,” one man said.
The leader of the group growled “ Shut up if he’s near he’ll hear us. I’m gonna kill my informant. He said twenty miles south and he had said that the elf didn’t move around.”
The group moved back in the direction of the city. Mist dropped down behind the last man and slid a blade into his neck. The body fell heavily. The last two spun around and lashed out.
“It’s him!” one of them said.
“Of course it is you dimwit. Watch out!” the assassin said as a blade slid between the man’s defenses and stabbed his heart.
The man continued to fight for a couple more seconds before falling over. The assassin smiled and left while Mist was occupied making sure the man was dead.

Artam smiled to himself as he left the city. The elf was good. Almost as good as himself. He looked forward to fighting the ranger again. But for now he had to deal with a little problem named Rokla.
