In the recent One Piece chapter, it highlighted an event or illness known as the "Amber Lead Syndrome" that appeared in the country of Frevance, where Law grew up. People mined the white ore, but that came with a consequence. It was like a luxury item and almost everything was made out of this substance.
Was basically like poison and was a hereditary disease, making people turn white or have white spots and they eventually die from it.
People who were affected by it will have shorter life spans, and their offspring will have shorter lifespans than the parent.
And interestingly enough, though not too surprising, it was also based off a real even that happened in Japan, the industrial revolution in the early 20th century. Mining of valuable minerals and release of cadmium by operations was common. The substance leaked into rivers, soil, etc. and caused
