I just noticed something. When Ao grabbed Boruto in the train, I think he was looking into boruto eye. Remember Ao has special byakugan so he might see
the Joagan like Momoshiki could see it with his.

My thoughts, predictions, and speculation for Chapter 17.
Ao surviving has three possible, reasonable explanations. Either he unlocked or has the Jougan somehow and used it to teleport away at the last second, was saved by one of Kara's members simply due to them wanting the power of his Byakugan, or he was saved by an Ootsutsuki for that same reason.
So that leaves the question as to why Ao would have Jougan. Now that Ao is front and center, it is highly likely that we will learn about the Hyuga who he killed and whose eye he stole. In order to tie in with Bolt, I think it would be appropriate to make said Hyuga is grandmother.
Aside from this potentially providing conflict between Ao and the Hyugas (Hinata, Hanabi, Hiashi), I theorize that one explanation could be that the Jougan might simply manifest in one Hyuga at a time, much like how there can only be one transmigrant of Indra and Ashura at a time, which would help explain why the Jougan would skip from Bolt's grandmother to him and not Hinata. However, I doubt this is the case, but it's still a possibility.
As for Ao himself returning, I think this is a massive indication that the Byakugan will indeed be relevant and not just the Jougan or Tenseigan. Up until this point in Bolt, we've had two Ootsutsukis who didn't make much use of their Byakugans while Bolt himself doesn't appear to be manifesting said eyes any time soon, as even his teen self lacks the Byakugan. So to bring back from the dead, speaking from a writing perspective, a comic-relief character who had like one major scene in the manga just because he has Byakugan speaks volumes.
I also think Ao is nothing more than a spy, much like Itachi was, since there is no reason for him to be evil, and even if he was, it would be bad writing as there would be no emotional weight to it. Interestingly, Ao also mentions that he hasn't used Taijutsu in a while, so this may be an indication he uses Gentle Fist.

Ao seems to be at the same age as Hiashi. As to how he obtain the Byakugan, we know alot of members that reside within the clan however there are couple of hyuga that we dont know too much so only 2 comes to my mind.
Either it's Hinata Mother or Neji Mother or perhaps it's a new character we don't know.
I hope we get to learn more of his backstory because there are a lot to him so I am really intrigued.
Ao taijutsu might be like Mukai where he's limited to 8 trigram 16 palm but then again he probably doesnt have any hyuga blood that resides him unless his byakugan sprouted his entire system that allows him to access to that state.

Ao giving the Uchiha a scare as much as the last one eyed byakugan user from Itachi Shiden
but in all honesty I have a feeling we might not get so much from him on the byakugan side
but if we do I have an even worse feeling of the byakugan getting a focus but the GF being left behind due to it being overly OP

Beside the whole byakugan/hyuga hype, I just can't help but I really like the direction the story is heading. There are some serious potential with the development between Ao and Boruto. Boruto was in a terrible mood but in a single chapter Ao made Boruto change of heart come off as completely natural and presented it in a amazing way as if he looked up to him. At the same time he made us the reader that Boruto is such a innocent and good natured kid who has no hardship and his attachment to Ao is clearly setting us up to feel as betrayed as Boruto will feel once he betrays him or viceversa.
If Ao was apart of the Hyuga incident that the Byakugan he happened to stole was from Hinata mother, then this would be a bigger bonus because this will gain weight on Boruto Shoulder and he will probably lashes out. Maybe this is why Sarada and Mitsuki was ordered to look after him which tells me that this arc is setting up to be something dark, Boruto seal will grow even bigger.

Yeah, I agree, the Hyuga Ao killed being Bolt's grandma would really help up the stakes, espeically with how much Botl cares for Hinata.

2. How he survived Juubidama ,was it thanks to Byakugan.
3. Is this genjutsu actually some form of Byakugan genjutsu.
4. Origin of Ao Byakugan.

I don't see a point of a byakugan user ever having a chakra avatar like the Susanoo since it is pointless against a chakra enhanced GF byakugan user (hence why Kaguya doesn't bother) but LB statement of an external guardian lion reminded me of this
Also I hope Boruto can use byakugan as well and then learn chidori to crush haters even more
