*Agnes sees a figure approaching her, at the specified spot. She stands up and pats her knees before going into an explanation of genjutsu, as the letter specified.*

"Hello sensei, my name's Agnes Oblige and it's a pleasure to be trained by you. First, I will explain what genjutsu is and all the knowledge I currently have of it. Genjutsu are the set jutsus utilized in order to disrupt an opponent's mental comprehension of the environment and thus confused the opponent, and cause them to misinterpret the conditions of the fight. This is done by disrupting the opponent's chakra flow within their brain with your own chakra. There are the usual methods of doing so, i.e., changing what they see, hear, touch, smell, or even taste, although the latter three tend to be more difficult to quickly perform and harder to create the proper conditions to properly perform them and actually make them effective when the opponent is firing off three A-Rank jutsus without a care in the world, so yeah, the prior two are definitively more effective in most cases. However, there are many other senses that the human body can comprehend than just the basic five, and understanding at least some of these sense can give a genjutsu user a far greater advantage in creating creative combos in which genjutsu can be better used. To give three examples of these senses that currently come to mind, balance is a sense that most people tend to not know is one or forget about, but by utilizing it, one can create conditions, such as making one think that they're in an earthquake or nauseous, that would make them fall or lose balance, thus making them unfocused from taijutsu stances or lose jutsu preparations. Another sense is the ability to interpret temperature changes within the environment, but this one is harder to use properly alone, and is nonsensical to use in many cases. A third sense is the ability to be aware in one's position, and the location of their extremities and general body position. In other words, one uses this sense to know that their right hand is next to the right side of their pelvis and not up one's nose. A clever genjutsu user may be capable to developing method to confuse this sense, but this is another sense that isn't that pertinent to a newcomer to the genjutsu arts.

Genjutsu has some avenues towards usage: Eyesight between two shinobi, sound, and usage of handseals. Eyesight usage of genjutsu is most often utilized with dojutsu, i.e., the sharingan, byakugan, and rinnegan (probably spelled some of those wrong but I am awful with these technical names), although I imagine that certain jutsus also require handseals alongside eyesight for proper usage. Sound is more technical, and I don't have the ability to use it anyways, so I can't say I know a lot about sound genjutsu, or sound in general as of yet. The final one is handseals, which are used as the catalyst to create a disruption within the opponent's mind or the environment.

Genjutsu can also be layered, thus creating a multi-genjutsu trap for the opponent. The trick is that a stronger genjutsu must be used first, and then a weaker genjutsu, as a stronger genjutsu would overwhelm a weaker genjutsu. For example, say I would first use a B-Rank genjutsu to create a illusionary shake on the ground, which would cause the opponent to tumble around on the ground, then I can add to it by casting a C-Rank genjutsu to cause the opponent to suffer from the headache, thus compounding the fact that they are, in fact, suffering from an earthquake. Yet, if I would reverse this order, then only the earthquake would occur, as the B-Rank genjutsu would overwhelm, and thus neutralize, the C-Rank genjutsu.

The final category of the basic genjutsu arts, at least from my understanding, is how to break one's self from genjutsu. There are four methods I know of, although I think there are more than these: Pain, Kai, Chakra surge, and Absorption jutsus. Pain is just that, causing pain to one's self to remove a genjutsu from their being; these are effective in correlation by both the rank of genjutsu used, as well as the type of pain caused to one's being. These vary from chipping one's finger to remove a D-Rank, to cutting one's finger off to remove a A-Rank or S-rank. Kai is a jutsu that can only be used once per turn to remove one genjutsu effect from one's being; this jutsu's effectiveness correlates with one's rank, meaning at my rank, S-Class, I believe that I can remove up I believe B-Rank jutsus, correct me if I'm wrong though. Chakra surges are essentially using up so much of your own chakra in an instant to immediately repel all genjutsus off one's being, for example, opening up a gate of the Eight Internal Gates would suffice for this effect. Finally, absorption jutsus uses outside chakra to repel and counter invading jutsus, hence creating a fresh pool of untainted chakra; activating a cursed mark or sage mode for suffice for this. I believe I'm missing at least one of these though..."

*She sighs and places her hands to her sides, awaiting her sensei's response.*

1.) Can you explain fully how utilizing handseals would be able to activate a genjutsu? I know from Scorp's illusionary arts thread that no chakra physically leaves from the user towards the afflicted, as no dojutsu user would be able to notice a chakra string approaching them before a genjutsu is casted. Can I ask if there are any details that would illuminate this for me?
2.) What are some effective methods to eliminate a S or F Ranked genjutsu, if I were to ever encounter one?

I'll choose Ayane for Rping.

OOC: I'll ask you if you have questions after explaining things to you as often times there will be the answers in the training
_________

Ayane sat stop a tree branch as you spoke. Her crimson eyes looked at you studiously as you spoke. When you finished she closed her eyes and smiled.

"You seem to have done a bit of homework, which is good. However you still have much to learn."
The young kunoichi said. She fell from the tree onto her feet in a perfect dismount. "Come with me, there's a special place that is good for training in genjutsu." Ayane took the lead and had you follow her.

"As we walk I will take you through the basics of genjutsu before we get into learning how to manipulate them. In the Phantom Academy the teaching style consists of a unique method of grouping techniques together and teaching them based on their characteristics rather than their rank and difficulty. We feel that the difficulty aspect can be diluted heavily in learning techniques if one learns the specific mechanics of the type of jutsu they're learning. Therefore our methods make it easier to learn and provides a vaster span of knowledge. Nevertheless before we even worry about that we will be learning more about three essential topics Realizing and Breaking Genjutsu, Casting Genjutsu, and Layering Genjutsu. While you mentioned each of these categories in your long intro there is much you don't understand or are misinformed about which is why we need to go over them. Is there anything you'd like to ask about before we continue?"

OOC: Understood

*Agnes begins to follow Ayane, keeping a slightly short distance of seven-eight feet from her as she has an unfortunate predisposition to get lost at the smallest things, and Agnes didn't want to lose Ayane and end up in Kumo or whatever other village... As the two traveled, Agnes listened studiously to Ayane's words, noting that she had much to learn yet, which is to be expected, considering that Agnes was still an abecedarian in most shinobi arts, and surely an amateur in all of them. As Ayane explains how the phantom school teaches, though, Agnes' curiosity is peaked, as it's entirely different from the methods of Castiel and Dean senseis, who tended to teach by the jutsu.*

*However, nothing Ayane stated seemed complex or confusing, and thus when Ayane asked if Agnes had any questions, Agnes replied:*

"I have none currently, you may continue."

*And continued to follow Ayane to their destination.*

"Good, now you're mostly correct in your descriptions about genjutsu affecting the senses and layering. However, when it comes to breaking you're a bit shaky. This makes it appropriate to start there.

When it comes to breaking there are four methods as you said but they are: Kai, Pain, Chakra Surge, and foreign/external chakra flow. You were keen on the first; Kai halts your chakra and then creates a sudden spike to force out enemy chakra, pain re-orients the balance of spiritual and physical chakras to reset your chakra and rid you of the genjutsu. Your issue come into play with the last two. For chakra surges, you stated it's when a shinobi uses so much of their chakra, that is not necessarily true. A small scale C-ranked technique like the lower level lightning style armor can break you out of genjutsu (abeilt weaker gen) but none-the-less it's not necessary to use a considerably large reserve of chakra. The necessary aspect is that you need to release chakra from all of your chakra points simultaneously.

Often called 'full body surges' techniques that create these surges of chakra are techniques like Chidori Negashi, where you release lightning from every point of your body to create a wave. Or techniques that coat your entire body (head to toe) in armor like you'd fine in a lot of earth release jutsu. The reason for this is; when genjutsu takes affect it disturbs your entire chakra system. While the target may be the cerebral nervous system for entrance, once the enemy chakra has afflicted you, your entire flow of chakra becomes irregular. Should you find a way to focus chakra through only a certian point, even if it's a powerful amount it will do you little good. However if you focus enough chakra in every point of your body and release it, it will force out the genjutsu.

We will start there for now as this section alone still has a bit of clarification on; 'what is enough?' chakra to use to release genjutsu. The first thing I want from you is to either find the exact levels necessary or if you can't take your best guess as to how much chakra is necessary to break genjutsu at all respective ranks E to F. For example: How much chakra (what rank of full body surge technique) is needed to release E-ranked, D-ranked, C-ranked, B-ranked, A-ranked, S-ranked and F-ranked genjutsu?"

____________

OOC Hint: There is a resource on the base that tells you this exact information.

*Agnes has a surprisingly easy time following her, certainly the discussion keeps her on the path. She notices, though, how easily her sensei moves throughout the path, her moves being perfectly at ease, in comparison to Agnes' clumsy movements, nearly tripping at times. However, her reply to her sensei is still prompt regardless of her clumsiness.*

"For most elemental jutsu chakra surge release, or for more specialized chakra surge releases (think Jyuuken here), you need to use a jutsu one rank higher than the genjutsu cast upon yourself in order to release the genjutsu. For E-rank genjutsu, you would need a D-Rank jutsu, D-Rank C-Rank, C-Rank B-Rank, B-Rank A-Rank, A-Rank S-Rank, and S-Rank F-Rank, with F-Rank genjutsus unable to be repelled by this method. You can also use Raw chakra surges to dispel genjutsus, but you need to use a jutsu two ranks stronger than the genjutsu used in order to eliminate said genjutsu. For E-Rank genjutsu, you would need a C-Rank raw chakra surge, for D-Rank B-Rank, for C-Rank A-Rank, for B-Rank S-Rank, and for A-Rank F-Rank, with S-Rank and F-Rank genjutsus unable to be repelled by this method. The only method I know of that can repel F-Rank genjutsus through the chakra surge method is unlocking one of the eight internal gates. This is because you are unlocking a restraint upon your chakra flow whenever you unlock a gate; this immediately causes a huge surge of chakra to flow throughout your body, thus not only rebalancing any inappropriate chakra in your system (dispelling the opponent's chakra), but also releasing bodily restraints upon your muscles. Thus, this is the most potent emergency method to release yourself from a genjutsu using this methodology, but only if you already have received training in the eight internal gates, thus making this not an available method for myself."

"Well, regarding F-ranked genjutsu there are few in existence, the likelyhood of you even running into a genjutsu of that magnitude is very rare in this day in age. However if you've ever heard of the 5 Genjutsu Sages, of which the headmaster of our academy is among, all of them possess at the very least one Forbidden Ranked genjutsu. Nevertheless in regard to breaking them it is possible but the cost is very risky. Unlocking the Eight Gates may work, but not for the reasons you think. The surge of chakra flow is not enough to break the genjutsu, it's the pain that may do it. Releasing the body's natural restraints on chakra to enhance their physical prowess is dangerous as it pushes the body beyond it's natural sustainable limits. It tears muscles and tissues to the point of near excruciating pain. The spike from releasing the gates may be strong enough once but should another genjutsu be placed on them, as the user has already become accustomed to the pain releasing more gates may not work unless you head to the last gate.

Though for the average shinobi who doesn't possess this obscure ability does have the ability to release gen of that magnitude. Genjutsu kai and possibly even external infusion won't work but enough pain could work. Pain, however, enough to break Forbidden level genjutsu would be as costly as severing a limb completely or major internal or external damage that would likely hinder you for the rest of your battle...if you're even able to continue that is. Long story short, there is a way, but it's almost as good as dying by the jutsu itself with such a pricy risk. Even opening the gates, the side effects that come after opening gates at cretin levels is costly, thus such methods are normally used as last resorts. "

*Agnes tilts her head slightly to the left as Ayane gives off her explanation.*

F-Rank genjutsus... what a terrifying jutsu that must be to face. Here's hoping that I never encounter one...

"Essentially, activation of the first gate for any eight internal gate user would allow them to release a genjutsu through pain, yet the following gates, until the seventh and eighth gates are reached, wouldn't help them release any further genjutsu because the pain, while it increases, increases at an incremental enough of a pace to allow the body to adapt to the pain beyond the initial release. The situation, I imagine, would be even worse for an eight internal gate master, as they can release the first five gates at once, and thus they probably have adapted to the pain of releasing those gates. Hence, it would probably require the sixth and seventh gate to help them release any genjutsu. And even if the eighth gate is used to release genjutsu, the user who releases it would die before long, as their body becomes incinerated from the incomprehensible amount of energy and chakra released from doing so. Thus, it truly is a last resort ability. And with the other method, you would probably bleed out by doing that form of significant damage to yourself, thus unless you have medical ninjutsu or use a Katon jutsu to stop the bleeding or through a similar methodology, you'd die either way. I believe I understand just why the Genjutsu Sages are feared now, thus I have no other statements at this time."

"Again, that's not all that correct. Eight Inner Gates is sufficient in breaking ordinary genjutsu through the method of chakra surge. The release of chakra is enough to act as a method of release for virtually all genjutsu bar Forbidden Ranked. It's safe to assume that any Forbidden Ranked genjutsu is abnormal in these regards and thus the rule of chakra surge wouldn't work for them. However if we're talking about using the gates to spike one's balance through pain, then the gates may be used. It's a bit of a gray area, nobody's ever been put into that type of situation. However when it comes to genjutsu of lower ranks, even S-ranks Eight Gates produces enough chakra throughout one's entire body to force the justu out, and thus when fighting against somebody with that ability you should be careful though many with the skill wouldn't rely on it to break out of genjutsu. As well, three of the sages at that are capable of opening the gates themselves. One thing you should understand, those truly worthy of the title of Sage are more than proficient in other areas, not just what they are specifically known for."

"You're fine sweetie, you're just a little shaky in areas. The next thing we'll go into is something you've already touched upon in the beginning a little. The use of external chakra infusion to release genjutsu, though you mistook it as chakra absorption. While chakra absorption is a method of external infusion it is not to say all types of external infusion are absorptions. The base absorption jutsu that you may learn takes chakra from your opponent and can be used to release you from genjutsu. Though honestly to pull that technique off, which requires physical contact by the user, would be difficult in many cases with genjutsu. However using natural energy is another form of absorption from an outside force of chakra that can spike your chakra. Things like Orochimaru style curse seals and having a Bijuu break you out if you're a Jinchuuriki are different.

In terms of the latter methods it's essentially having chakra from two different individuals momentarily spiking your chakra. The Bijuu is most related to the initial method where, if you have a comrade, clone, or summon on the field fighting along side you and you get caught. If they know of your predicament and are close enough they can merely send a burst of chakra into your body to release you from the genjutsu.

All of these methods are linked together in causing a momentary spike. I told you about this earlier with the other methods. Spiking your chakra for a brief moment to return it to reality is necessary to break genjutsu, however continued influxes of that kind after the initial spike will not break you from genjutsu thereafter the spike must be brief and powerful enough to shove the jutsu out of you. Understand?"

"Alright then, now we can go onto casting genjutsu techniques. The concept of genjutsu is using chakra to disrupt your opponent's flow of chakra and create false images and affects that fool with your opponent's senses. As you mentioned before these encompass the five senses and other areas such as equilibrium, balance, etc. However all such abilities stem from manipulation of one or multiple senses in various ways. For example, creating the effects of earthquakes and tremors manipulate the sense of visual perception, tactile sense, and potentially auditory. All of these are jumbled together to affect your opponent in a way that would imitate an earthquake.

Now as for casting a genjutsu, you asked how hand seals are used to cast genjutsu. Just like in ninjutsu hand seals are used to facilitate the chakra for the specific effects. If we look at a basic example like the fireball jutsu, the hand seals help the shinobi in gathering their fire nature chakra, moving it through their body to the release point and then using shape manipulation and releasing it. In the case of genjutsu hand seals help take the chakra from point A (you) to point B (your opponent) and create the effects such as the manipulation of senses to create an earthquake for example. It's exactly the same as with ninjutsu only translated to genjutsu. Understand?"

"Essentially, to borrow from Scorps-sama's writings, there's a synergization that's produced when you perform the needed hand seals that's synches the user's chakra fluctuations with the opponent's. Thus, the user needs an avenue, eye sight, sound, or as you mentioned, hand seals, in order to initiate the user's chakra fluctuation. The second key, then, in close proximity with the opponent, who'll then be affected by this fluctuation, and thus be induced underneath the intended genjutsu effects because the fluctuation would impede their physical/spiritual balance in their chakra. Am I correct with this?"

"Partially, while you're right with the hand seals it is not always a necessity to create hand seals for genjutsu. Some genjutsu don't require you to weave any hand seals, some only require one, others require several it all depends. The key thing to remember is that whatever the conditions; be it hand seals or some other method/medium you need to preform takes your chakra from point A to B. Once that condition has been met your chakra will sync with our opponent's and cast the genjutsu.

Contrary to some beliefs, the chakra from genjutsu doesn't travel like a stream or a line it is taken from one point directly to the other. However the key component to casting any genjutsu is having a direct mode of sense to your opponent. Meaning you must see, hear, smell, feel whatever and you need to know precisly their location. Typically having a line of sight of your opponent, however if skilled enough you can hear (only with appropriate sound release training and jutsu), smell (if you have heightened olfactory senses like Inuzuka) or feel them (direct contact or some sort of seismic sense) or...even if you can taste them. A 'general' location is never enough 'exact' location is necessary. If you have abilities like sensory or some other sixth sense, you will be able to use it even if those other senses aren't accessible to you at the moment. Though it is common for shinobi who know of their opponent's reputation in genjutsu to try and block their line of sight as, without another active sensory jutsu active they won't be able to use their genjutsu."

"Now then I want to ask you about other mediums of genjutsu induction. We've discussed the most basic mechanics of genjutsu; getting your chakra to your opponent to cause an internal disruption. We've also talked about the use of hand seals as a medium to get your chakra to your opponents. Now I want to ask you a few other ways in which a shinobi can induce chakra aside from hand seals. You've already hinted toward one way in your initial introduction.

And for the record I'm looking for alternative answer from dojutsu based genjutsu."

"I mentioned sound genjutsu earlier, in which your chakra travels by sound in order to induce a genjutsu effect, but another one is by smell or taste, one exclusive to the Gamni clan to the proficiency required in order for those triggers to function properly in the midst of a difficult battle. This clan has the capability of sending out chakra enhanced toxins that the opponent will end up tasting/smelling, thus effecting their phermones, or cell receptors on their tongue or in the lining of their nose, that will then disrupt the opponent's chakra flow throughout the opponent's body and thus inducing a genjutsu. A final methodology is curiously light. I imagine it works similarly to that of normal eyesight, except it uses a chakra produced lightsource in order to send in your chakra into the opponent through their eyes, and thus induce them into a genjutsu. Perhaps I'm missing some other methods, in which case I apologize for not knowing them. However, I have a quick question about the light methodology of genjutsu induction, can one use a pre-existing jutsu for induction? Or does the preparation of the genjutsu itself preclude the light source production? Also, what are some examples of light-source inducted genjutsu, as I've never heard of this methodology until I read Scorps' writings?"

Sorry for the late reply

"Very good, all answers are correct. Genjutsu ordinarily is facilitated purely through hand seals and the user synching their chakra with their opponent for the genjutsu. However when they are combined with mediums such as sound waves, or other physical sensory stimuli they can enter the chakra network that way. While you won't be learning any such techniques in our training these present possibilities for when you go to create your own techniques. As well there are a few types of techniques such as sound jutsu and some unique genjutsu that are possessed by few shinobi that do use some of these methods. As you said before, the Gami clan is such a clan though they're relatively new.

As for your question, it's not so much light itself but any sort of visual stimuli that can be used to manipulate and cause genjutsu. Though all things visual tend to possess some qualities of 'light' in them so I suppose that's moot. In all actuality, the Lightning Release Flash Pillar was originally a genjutsu that used an increasingly bright light to blind the opponent but it's not considered a ninjutsu. Directly to your question, no actual light based illusions come to mind other than that. I'm also not sure of the plausibility for using existing techniques that aren't originally illusions to set up as a precursor, at least not in the case of light.

Anymore questions?"
