Is it just me or did you guys also have Marco the Phoenix confused as Whitebeard's firstmate, and then saw the age difference and realized he wasn't his first mate? =D lol.
Yes Whitebeard is awesome. We know this.
How old is Marco? He's been in the WB pirates for a while, and I think it's implied that he is indeed the First Mate, given that he's the new leader and whatnot.
About shanks age, from the looks of it o-o. And it kind of makes sense since, all of them are like "Children" to whitebeard..
Dafuq does age have to do with it?
Whitebeard was quite young when he started.. rofl. Shanks and them were kids back then.. and now look at them.. pretty sure his first mate would be Rayleigh's age atleast.
First mate is just your right-hand man, not whoever joined first. It could very well be Marco.
-sigh-, now i'm gonna sound rude.. but.. do you know how stupid that statement was?
First mate = the FIRST mate of the captain. Zoro the first crew member = Luffy's first mate. Rayleigh the first member for Roger's crew = Roger's first mate.
There is a reason why its called first mate and not right hand man.
First mate is not just something in one piece, but even to all the pirates whether fictional or real life. Jack Sparrow's first mate is Mr.Gibbs.
First Mate can become your right hand man, but right hand man can't become your first mate.

Its not a dictionary term lol. Its a title, its not a simple term bro. Its a title for the first companion a crews captain has. You're taking the term too literally.
Taken from OP wiki:
A First Mate is the top officer on board a ship after the captain. Mostly, they may fill a number of roles from checking stock to making sure everyone else is doing their job on the ship. They answer only to one person on a ship, the captain.
Essentially, the first mate is the one officer the captain must put full trust in and pick carefully. They are the captain's right-hand man and if the captain is not at hand on the ship or is otherwise incapacitated, the first mate is the next in line to take over the captain's job. In history there were a few incidents where the first mate killed the captain to take his role, cases like these were rare but not unheard of.

Only problem is Rayleigh is not that type of a man either, lol. Nor is Zoro, nor has Beckman showed to be that kind of a man. Also, they are telling us what a first mate usually does. And have shown to do.
And that is the point, the second person to join the crew is automaticall in the lead for to become captain. By Natural order he is the next captain.
Zoro is considered as Luffy's First mate by others in one piece -verse. lol.
I think you are the one taking the definition of wikia to seriously. And not looking at the title for what it is.
Not even close to my logic. My logic is that the rooster sings because the sun rises =]. In fact it is your logic that is saying the rooster sings and because of that the sun rises... aka he has officer responsibility and has trust from the captain, and hence why he is the first mate.. My logic is that he is the first mate, and hence why he has responsibilities.Well, by that logic, it's the fact that the rooster sings every morning that the sun rises. But we all know the sun doesn't rise because of the rooster.
The First Mate is not the first recruit of the captain, it's the First Person the captain goes to when he needs something. In terms of the crews you've mentioned, the First Mate, an actual rank, is in fact, the first person the captain recruited, because these are small pirate crews that value adventure and friendship, so it is natural the person they trust the most is the person that has been with them the longest. So the First Mate can be the first person on the crew, but it doesn't mean it has to, let alone that it is its definition. In fact, Marco the most obvious deduction is that Marco is Whitebeard's First Mate, since he was the captain of the 1st Division, but it is highly unlikely that he was the first person to be recruited.
It is a common fallacy, but in essence, my point is Correlation does not imply Causation, especially when there's a clear and universal definition for the term of First Mate.
So please, don't be that guy.

When has marco been called his first mate? never.. he was specifically said to be called the commander of the first division or one of whitebeard's children.
Thats like saying if Rayleigh and Roger had split up, the next strongest after Rayleigh would be the first mate.. rofl. uh no. Rayleigh forever shall be Roger's first mate.
You clearly fail to provide any manga evidence to support your point, when i have provided 2 main ones.
How am i being that guy, cause i'm going with what the word means in the context its always used in?
