I am interested....if narutos father was namikaze,why is he uzumaki? yes I understand maybe he was given different familyname to hide who's son he was but....naruto should know there are no other uzumakies in the village and he is the only one by that name.and why UZUMAKI? what does it mean or who named him like that
I also want to know where are other namikaze members?or minato was the last of his kind? are namikaze's somehow related to senju?I remember someone posting about it.

i think that he was called uzumaki so he wouldnt have to live in his fathers shadow so he could be his own hero, im not sure if there would be anyother namikaze members left but i do think there is some secret there

I think he's asking more than the facts that we know, i.e. motivations.

Does anyone think his name was changed at birth during the sealing of the 9-tails since the Kyuubi was made a secret? Perhaps he was born as Namikaze, but they changed his name to protect the secret and perhaps Naruto. Further, because Uzamaki is from the Whirlpool country so no one in the village would have that last name, further detaching him from his heritage.

Naruto is just a name Jiraiya thought up while eating Ramen and used it in his first book that the fourth read. People have already mentioned that.

I don't think it's to keep him out of his father's shadow. Naruto wanted to surpass Jiraiya when he decided to start sage training, and Jiraiya was a Sannin.

I read in another fandom and it is just a hearsay- so I maybe wrong-

Somebody said that in Japan a child could be named after their mother if she was a heiress or belong to more infulential family or something like that. Simply give the child name of the better known family. So it maybe just a cultural thing. In that case Kishi might not even bother to give an explanation.

More importantly with the same name as the fouth hokage everybody would know his ID in an instant. Leaf village wanted to keep it a secret not advertise it. So did Kishi. He planned to drop hints but waited for a long time before revealing his identity for sure....

naruto does know there arent any uzumakis in the village, thats why he felt like such an outsider growing up, and someone already said it but his mother's name was uzumaki, and im not sure if it was to hide his identity, bcause his father was the hokage, which means people must have known who his wife was, i mean asuma denied his relationship with kurenai and yet everyone knew anyways, and im sure the whirlpool country knew that one of their own married one of the greatest shinobi ever

Naruto's father was Minato Namikaze ( I know Namikaze wasn't his last name but that's unimportant )
Naruto's mother was Kushina Uzamaki.
The name Uzamaki means 'Whirlpool'
As fr why he was given Kushina's name instead of Minatos it was because Sarutobi wanted to protect Naruto. He thought that if Naruto held Kushina's last name instead of Minato's he could keep Naruto, and the villagers, from finding out about the beast inside him. It was done so that the villagers wouldn't fear him, but hail him as a hero.
This all backfired terribly, however, because the older generation couldn't keep their mouths shut about the subject. The truth about Naruto spread around, and thusly he was largely shunned by the village.

I lied a little bit. Sorry, I misunderstood what I had previously researched an had attempted to recall it from memory. I sensed that what I said about his name was a little off from what I read, so I decided to find out again for myself. Here you go:

Naruto can mean "maelstrom", and is also the name for a sliced stick of Kamaboko with a pink whirlpool design in the middle that is used as a topping for ramen which is also Naruto's favorite food. The surname Uzumaki is a pun on "spiral" (??), while uzumaki refers to a three-dimensional spiral, like a whirlpool or vortex.

Look at this image and shoulder of Naruto. That sign I think represents "Whirlpool". Maybe it represents Wind, rotating wind, as we can see in Rasengan. May be it refers that he has also Water element.

Also, I found once that "Naruto" meant "tolerace", "stamina" if I am not wrong. Then I thought, Naruto is indeed sb with great stamina.
