A single book, Trilogy or Saga?

I agree with the above and add that, if you're justs starting, it's best to make either one book or a series of short stories, trying out character building and background creation. Why step into compromise as big as a Saga when you don't even know if you're cut out for it. Start small and reach greater heights gradually, and eventually, you won't even need to ask yourself how long you should write your stories, things will just fall into place accordingly

The "Inheritance cycle" was a trilogy from the beginning (Paolini was young as well) and ended up being a major succes, but generally I'd have to agree with lili on this one. Making a saga is a lot of work, and not an easy job either.

Well, I for once did not enjoy the Inheritance Cycle all that much, and it left many loopholes and untied threads.
