A single book, Trilogy or Saga?

Hey, i've been planning to write a book lately. I've gone through planning all the characters, story, plot etc. But I'm stuck on how long I should prolong the story for. How many should I write? 1 or 2? A trilogy? or a saga? Which one would you rather read? I want to hear other people's opinions!

Aim for one book at the moment, but keep plenty of content in mind for a sequel or two. Whatever doesn't quite fit in the first book could easily fit in the next.

A saga would take an immense amount of time and planning, so start small instead of aiming for something that may be too big.

With that type o plot you Gould go for a trilogy or saga.
First book describing the no, second the past, third the solution.
And if you wanna go for a saga save the history tidbit for the second to last book.

At least that's how I'd do mine.
However I'm only doing one novel. ^.^

if you already have the whole plot down, it depends on how long that is, make the book as long as it needs to be to be good not try to shoehorn it into a predetermined template. you also need to consider if the plot lends itself into splitting it into various pieces, if you're going for two books or a trilogy there needs to be a point in the plot where some meaningful conclusion is reached yet there's still more to go, suspense etc. hope this helps, and good luck

If you're wanting to write a fantasy or a very, very long series (Over 800 pages.) make it a multi part story. (Saying trilogy is too limiting. Leave the two, four, or more book option open.)

If it's gonna be shorter than that, you might as well write it in one. Look at Crime and Punishment, Catch 22, etc. A lot of the great works were great because it was one volume, one story. It basically works better as a whole as opposed to smaller parts if that's practically possible.

I studied writing so here's what I think.

Think about your story, don't prolong the story if it is unnecessary. The readers will get bored and not even bother to read the others books. They will think that this story is just been dragged out and could of been in one book. For example a book like "Life of Pi" would have just been boring as hell if it was a trilogy.

Usually novels that are put into Trilogies are novels that have a lot of background story, history, tons of characters and a main story-line with sub stories in-between. Many books that are trilogies or sagas didn't work out, because of being too repetitive.

So let your story tell you how many books it should be. If it is focusing on one main story with a few characters I'd say one book.

Of course what I mentioned aren't official rules, you can pretty much do whatever you want, but then you would be experimenting and that's a risk. However sometimes risks pay off.
