Maybe it's because they don't want people to be making their text annoyingly small or big, and a bunch of other reasons but I'm not sure.

It is allowed, you have to go to User CP; Edit Options; Miscellaneous Options [the last box] & click on Standard Editor - Extra Formatting Controls
