Like someone said Rins death was the catalyst. Just like Madara losing his brethren to the Senju and lust for power was his. Sasuke lost his family and Itachi to his own village. Thing about Obito was that he clearly harbors some feelings towards rin and it's very pedophilish imo. Madaras manipulation on him was through IT he can see Rin again.
