Well.. the MS is unlocked by killing your best friend. so.. It fits perfectly. but i agree it did lay dormant.

Firstly, I am convinced that kakashi doesn't seem like a person who would kill his own comrade. Secondly, kakashi did not have to kill obito to get mangekyou, as he just had to experience the death. Plus to me the flashback seems pretty true.

his MS might have been unlocked after itachi put him in tsukuyomi. being in that genjutsu was death, and may have bought past emotions(the death of obito) in an intense way. now thats a thought!

Wrong "not by killing your best friend" but by witnessing their deaths. Point example-Sasuke did not really kill itachi, itachi died from his sickness and overusing his charka to wait for orchi to show him self. (sasuke did not did any finishing blow on him" u just have to witness their death-basically like dbz the pain of lost unlock the ms if you think like that. ( the way it was written in the manga it's like there is 2 options "kill, or witness them die" lets be real itachi knew sasuke couldn't kill him even if he try to make it look so >.> the seconds he had to put his hand on sasuke head, could have been sasuke death.)
