The 8th gate has a high cost, so it's not impossible. However, Madara probably knows that, so he just has to play it defensively and dodge everything till Gai dies... Hashirama could do the same.

Being temporary stronger than someone, does not mean you win the battle. Using the gates is indeed a powerful tool, but it's not a permament effect, and you will most likely lose, once it ends.

So I don't think Gai could beat Hashirama or Tobirama for that matter, however, we haven't seen the 8th gate yet. It's all up to Kishi

sorry but how did mourning peacock struggle against 30% kisame clone?

He owned that clone and he was basically going to own the real kisame with but used daytime tiger to find the intel, as there were too many messenger sharks. Gai owned the sharks and kismet as well.

As for how strong it will be.

We know this,

in the 6th gate, gai is able to reach supersonic speeds(much faster than sound in air). Don't know how fast the 7th gate is but it looks like its not enough to take on a juubi host.

So thinking the 8th gate would be as fast as time-space jutsu(fast as light).

So gai would be like minato but ridicular fire power at the same time.

I was right.

Madara acknowledged Gai saying that he hasn't felt this excited since he fought Hashirama. But Madara would only say that after fighting an opponent that matched his strength. Being that Madara has already exceeded Hashirama, what he meant wasn't that Gai is as strong as Hashirama, he meant that for the first time after being the Juubi Jin, he was found an opponent that can challenge his strength.
