I wonder the same thing too, I mean how old is tsunade when she took the job and how old is she now? Like 52 years old or something.

Hiruzen was 68 when oro killed him, minus 12/1r years and we're back to when naruto was born and the fourth died.

Now 68-12/13=56/55 so let's say Hiruzen was 55 when he retook the job, so how old was he when Minato took it from him, I'd say Minato was hokage for 3 years max before he died, and that puts Hiruzen at age 52, the same age as the current sannin. Which begs the question, if Hiruzen retired at the age of 52 because of old age, why the hell did the leaf choose tsunade/jiraiya at round about that same age, how long did they expect her or Jiraiya to stay in charge?

The current kage doesn't choose a successor unless that ninja becomes more powerful than him. That's the reason why hiruzen chose minato. Not because he was tired of the job or too old for it. Once a ninja rises as being more powerful than the current kage that's when the kage passes the torch. Keep in note this usually does not happen because most of the time no one in the village is stronger than the current kage while he is in his prime. And the kage usually dies before gets too old. Oonoki is still kage because he is still the strongest ninja in his village.

My brother's asking the same thing.

And the answer to that would be definitely this.

The Hokage doesn't have to die in order to choose a successor.

Minato was the successor of Hiruzen and was chosen to be the 4th Hokage. However, Minato died young and thus Hiruzen was forced to return to the seat.
