It was never said that A could take on the 8 tails by himself. When it showed him fighting the 8 tails his father was there as well as a group of other shinobi. It was stated that the 3rd could fight the 8 tails head on by himself. 3rd Raikage wins, and people keep saying A is faster, but we have no evidence of it. They both had the lightning armor and it's never been stated that A was faster than his father and even if he is it's not by a large margin like some people think.
