the third hokage is known as the professor and as the god of shinobi. that just shows how strong he is. when he was fighting orichimaru, the first hokage and the second hokage emma (his monkey) said his performance was pitful even though he was holding his own. everyone is going to say that the first and second were not at their best but they could still use all their tecniques and third was still able to fight all three.. in old age. and if he could do that at thath age imagine how good he would have been in his prime. many people are gunna say that he handed the village to the fourth because he wanted the strongest person defending the village but the third was already in old age and the fourth was stronger than him at that TIME. the third in his prime is the strongest in the manga
