To our knowledge, something has had to incarcerate the current Hokage before a new one is to be assigned.

Example:

The Third died, and Tsunade was given the Hokage position.

Tsunade was determined to be in an indefinite coma, so Danzo/Kakashi were extended the Hokage role.

My question is:

What happened to the Third that caused the Village to assign Minato the Hokage position?

Because after Minato died, obviously the Third was in good enough shape to reclaim his former position, and for another 13 years for that matter.

If he was in such good a shape 13 years later, why was he succeeded?

I understand that he was getting into his later years, so that could have been the case. But, due to that case, if they named a fourth, rather than revert back to their Third, why didn't they just name a fifth when Minato died?

Third resigned. Gave it to Minato.
That's the only real reason I can think of too. lol "Hey, you look like you'd be a better Hokage than me, take it." =\ ?

Tsunade wasn't given the Hokage title by the 3rd it was giving by Jiraiya because he declined it to give it to her
This is true, but regardless of how she came to be Hokage, I was just summing it up. Nice catch though. =D

He was getting old, and he found someone who had the skills/personality to become Hokage, and so he appointed someone. When the Fourth died, chances are that the 3rd was not comfortable about passing the title on to anyone else, so he retook up the position.

So did he just up and one day say pull a Murtaugh and say "I'm too old for this sh*t", retire, and make Minato Hokage... Just to decide to come back out of retirement to do it for another 13 yrs?? Strange move my old friend. =\
Somewhere in the anime (early episodes) it talks about how he decided that Minato would be the best to be the hokage and he gave up the reigns.

Jiraiya at the time of the 4ths passing was the only other ninja capable of being hokage aside from the 3rd, and as hes shown, he didnt want to be hokage, and was busy doing high rank missions like keep tabs of akatsuki

The third was getting old and wanted for for oro to take his place but he sees oro as evil and switch to jiraiya but jiraiya didn't want to become hakage due to freedom and being a pervert and after all that the third was amazed at everything minato does and jiraiya told him so after all the praised everybody around minato gave him for being a prodigy and a far more capable of a genius and saw minato develop or used his flying thunder god technic so he decided to passeed the title minato as the strongest ninja in the village and so people started to be more fearsome of minato and said to everybody in the narutoverse whenever you see minato run cuz if you don't you will be dead without even notice that you were attack except tobi who actually know when he got beaten by minato and ran from him of being worthy to be called hokage as praising him of being called yellow flash due to his speed without the s/t flying thunder and with it too.
