I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the manga that Nagato was stronger than with the 6th path bodies.

So don't know why people keep saying Nagato with 6th path would own and make Nagato a lone look weak (He is much more vulnerable tho).

Anyways Itachi and Nagato take this.

Nagato was only stated to be faster in using his techniques compared to pain.

Pain has a whole set of advantages in battle that nagato didn't:

1) MOBILITY
2) immunity to poisons
3) six times the amount of vision
4) immunity to soul-stealing techniques
5) defeating pain doesn't equate to actually winning since nagato is still there
6) omni-directional attacks

I believe the six paths of pain are tougher to defeat for said reasons.
