BALI —

Prosecutors say a 16-year-old Japanese boy accused of possessing marijuana on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali could spend more than a decade behind bars if convicted.

State prosecutor Romulus Haholongan said Thursday that the boy has been detained in a police cell since Aug 8, when he allegedly bought a small amount of marijuana while vacationing with his mother. The teenager is too young to be identified under Indonesian law.

Haholongan said the boy will stand trial this month and faces 12 years in detention under Indonesia’s tough narcotics law.

Late last year, a 14-year-old Australian boy avoided prison after serving two months in an Indonesia detention center for buying drugs. The court showed leniency after the boy expressed remorse and said he had bought the drugs for personal use.

they've given people lengthier sentences here in the states 15-25 years hell the DEA was created to combat marijuana before it expanded it's scope on narcotics...

Wow, I'm against jail anyway, but this just seems too stupid. If I was the kid and they were going to lock me up that long, I'd just ask to be executed after being convicted, or I'd hang myself. So strange, where I am, getting caught with weed just earns you ticket; I think it's like 100-200 bucks and they take your weed...not that I've ever been caught though, and not that I toke much anymore.

ha! Well, I think it's his own fault. When ya travel another country and ya thinking in carrying drugs (even if it's only weed), ya should know what can happen to ya. We all know most of countries are against drugs, the only different thing is how hard their law is.

That's a bit harsh..
He didn't really bring a lot with him either, so assuming it was for personal use is quite reasonable. Let's wait and see whether he shows remorse or not?
