Assuming the ones readying this are also fans of the Naruto manga, I am sure that they would have certain opinions of the two most important characters, Naruto and Sasuke. While both have adopted their own fans for their own reasons, I believe that a big argument is Naruto/Sasuke is a better character than Sasuke/Naruto. I believe that no one is wrong, because in reality we were made to read two different stories all under the title "NARUTO", and that BOTH Naruto and Sasuke are the main character of their own part of the story. Naruto was the main character of the "shonen" aspect, while Sasuke was the main character of the "ninja" aspect.
Though the two stories often overlapped, at their core they were very different.
Let us first take into consideration how they are seen by the other characters in the story, in addition to how we look at them. Naruto was a loudmouth prankster that, while not skilled in the typical way considering the setting, managed to pull off victories simply because of his shonen characteristics (power of friendship, hard work, and "purity"). On the other hand, Sasuke excelled in the stereotypical ninja way (technique, lineage, "darkness"), something which made him the ideal character to follow in a ninja tale. Naruto was the no-name "orphan" with the goal of being "the best" (Hokage, subjectively highest position in the ninja world.) Sasuke was the survivor of a famous clan, very publicly orphan"ed" by his evil brother, and his sole ambition was to seek vengeance (Rikimaru, Hayabuse Ryu, Oboro Hotsuma, etc. etc.)
Next let us consider how their stories progressed. Naruto path of "getting to the zenith" can be broken up as 1) first assimilating those he directly interacts with (team), 2) assimilating those in his age (chunin exam), assimilating the person in charge (Tsunade), 3) assimilating the foreign village (saving Gaara), 4) assimilating own village (defeat of Pain), 5) assimilating world's love and trust (entirety of 4th shinobi world war), and 6) bonus battle against rival.
Sasuke's story of vengeance can be seen as 1) having and comparing skills needed for the revenge (from the time he is shown until the end of chunin exam), 2) seeing that he is lacking in preparation and seeking to rectify that (based off interactions with Orochimaru, Gaara, Itachi, and yes even Naruto), 3) having the power for and enacting vengeance (he emerged alive from his fights with Orochimaru, Deidara, and Itachi), and 4) finding new places to throw more vengeance (against Danzo for the sake of his brother, against Konoha for the memory of his clan, against the ninja villages for the state of the current ninja world, against the entire world for the sake of his ambition, and finally against Naruto for the sake of destiny and pride.)
There is more to say, but let us first discuss the above. What do you think?
