I wonder if this chapter portrays how Mashima personally feels the loss of his father is like. How he keeps his dad inside his heart and remembers him when he is in his gloomiest to be inspired to keep fighting on when he is facing obstacles.
Igneel coming out to save Natsu could be portraying how Mashima remembering his father is therapeutic.
